The Texas A&M Student Senate last night [4-3-13] voted 35-28 in favor of a measure allowing students to opt out of funding the campus GLBT Resource Center if they have religious objections:

    http://www.towleroad.com/2013/04/texas-am-student-senate-passes-measure-allowing-religion-based-discrimination-against-campus-glbt-ce.html

Though it’s unclear this student-led attack on LGBT Aggies is enforceable, the state legislature is considering a broader change that very well could. Texas Rep. Bill Zedler (R) has filed an amendment to the state’s appropriations bill to cut funding for public universities that have “Gender and Sexuality Centers and Related Student Centers.” The amendment offensively claims that the centers promote behaviors that have a high risk for disease:

"An institution of higher education may not use money appropriated to the institution under this Act, or any property or facility of the institution funded by appropriations under this Act, to support, promote, or encourage any behavior that would lead to high risk behavior for AIDS, HIV, Hepatitis B, or any sexually transmitted disease."

I lived over 4 years in Texas. But in the relatively isolated world of Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, living in field grade officer housing. Even when I went camping & fishing it was usually at a military campground, so I had less contact with ordinary residents than if I lived "on the economy" as we sometimes called it.

And the US Army was surprisingly liberal in its social attitudes. Discrimination was forbidden by race or gender, except regarding homosexuals. And even then most senior officers like myself ignored the issue, we thought we had more important things to worry about. It was mainly the junior officers and NCOs I saw getting occasionally in a tizzy about gays. Now, however, I understand there's been a deliberate fundamentalist infiltration of the officer corps in more recent years, introducing bigotry we rarely had in my day.

When I lived for a short time in Houston with my first partner I also saw little anti-gay hatred, but that's a big city. And we spent a lot of time within the gay community, and the gay enclave ("ghetto") of the Montrose Section.

The area northeast of Houston, though, getting close to the Louisiana border, was no-man's land. I would stay with a gay friend there, and we had to be in total stealth mode. He was terrified of being outed, and I had to watch everything I said or did.

America has no business talking to anyone about "freedom" anymore.

Yeah, the only freedom being promoted is the freedom of favored religious groups to discriminate against everyone else.

The Founders had a better idea: just keep religion out of a democracy, because people believe in many different religions. They feared a tyranny of the majority would persecute minorities, and that is exactly what our modern Christian Taliban seek, whether according to religion, race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

And I wouldn't call it an American Taliban, because it is distinctly Christian and operates on evangelical Christian tenets, and is trying to extend its influence into other countries, too. It is not Jewish, it is not Hindu, it is not like any other religion but one. Its closest model is indeed the Islamic Taliban.

Typical Aggies. White, religious, and if your not like us your not welcome here.
As a native Texan this does not come as a surprise.

If this bill does in fact become implemented I want to know what's stopping students from opting out of other fee's that support on campus organizations that they do not believe in. While we're at it let us students opt out of any fees that we do not use, such as my printing fee of 25 bucks a semester in which I have never used.

I can proudly say THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON unanimously passed a resolution opposing a state budget amendment designed to cut funding for LGBT centers.

    Go Coogs!!!!

icon_rolleyes.gif Well, I hope this will be a severe "learning experience" for the stupid kids on that student council. Oh wait... it's texas. Probably not.

At least they have a GLBT center. That was completely off the radar in my day. In fact, back then, the student council was composed entirely of Bif and Mufffy from frat row. All student fees were spent exclusively on lavish frat parties. (Things may not have changed much...)

I know of at least two campuses where the independent and grad students got PO'ed enough to rise up and take over student government. (After all, they are the majority, they just usually don't care about that stuff.) They canned the frat parties and started spending money on stuff like bringing in interesting people for lecture series, and buying rental gear for the outdoor center.

So many disappeared friends already gone. If we could just make it across the northern boarder to Paradise Land. Oh well, foolish dreams of an idiotic fool...

What an incredibly selfish thing to say. Because you don't feel threatened, discrimination against gays is a big joke to you. Well maybe other gays don't "live with a registered Republican" to give them cowardly cover.

The joke is the people talking about how bigoted America is and the reaction to the Aggie student government voting about the use of student fees.

paraphrasing aboveNews at 10: Student government at a conservative school in a conservative state democratically does something short sighted and discriminatory. Freedom is now dead in America.

    That's the joke.

We need to teach the diversity and compassion that Global Astrology teaches (Global Astrology = Astro-Carto-Graphy, Chinese Astrology, Vedic Remedies to Astrological Problems, Western Astrology) be the more immediate spiritual lesson rather than Christianity. Christians and their religious-based objections sometimes hurt human rights and education.

Astrology contributes to our understanding of our reason for being incarnated on Earth: not all of us are here to be heterosexuals (and I wish somebody would help me tell Russia that). Astrology is the religion of the Age of Aquarius.

And the HRC wants to put marriage at the altar of Christians? Puh-lease, here, they're objecting to our right to exist on college campuses. I don't care how many dark pink equal signs they get, they are just making it hard for GLBT people to get accepted AND AFFIRMED in socially conservative, religious institutions. Now, if GLBT people try to make progress in socially conservative churches, the church conservatives say not only here comes GLBT but here comes gay marriage too.

    Religious objections?

Separation of church & state vs. policy based on religious objection

Churches are somewhat prohibited from endorsing candidates from the pulpit. So, religion is somewhat prohibited from being an explicit basis for sustaining or objecting to public affairs (as in government business). Therefore, a public university, I would think, cannot block the funding to a GLBT student organization on the grounds of religious objection to those who are created equal from assembling.

Student Life/Student Development departments of universities are to enrich the extra-curricular lives of all students.

I think their motivation for this is wrong, but the result is fair. Were there funding I could influence, I would opt out of supporting the local LGBT chapter. It saw their table at the opening week, and it was all about sex. It came off as more of a hookup group that support society. I could not want less to do with them.

you can't do anything in your country without passing both the military expansionist, and jeebus test. This story is just one more nail in the coffin. In the second link the Cali politician wants to ban funding from any school that promotes anything that increases aids(etc), once again ignoring that same sex marriage and promoting lesbianism are the two fastest ways to lessen the effects of that. North Carolina is now facing a bill to declare a state religion!.Your patriot act means you cant do anything at all without surveillance, warrant or not, you pretty much lost habeas corpus in 2011, an atheist couldn't get elected there for all the bribes in china, you still argue about gays getting married like it's 1960, and even your enlightened SCOTUS asks questions about it like they are priests or something ( really, "well we dont know what the effects of gay marriage are...lets just wait...."). You shoot a bunch of toddlers and then bravely buy more automatic weapons to kill the oppressive politicians that you bend over for at ever turn as they take your privacy, freedom, and impose their taliban-esque policies on your life. All the while you attack caveman with your never ending armada of death because some rich guy figured out a way to take another trillion dollars out of the tax payers pockets for himself while you refuse to fund healthcare for everyone, or just MAYBE, think about polution being a problem. Its just TRAGIC. Your news reports are non-stop fear, fear, terror, drugs fear, etc. gotta attack iran, gotta attack n.korea, baby jeebus gotta have his gun to keep down the homos...

do any of these things sound like "FREE" or "BRAVE"?
