A Tamandua, otherwise known as an Anteater.

I absolutely love these guys; and I'm well aware they are an exotic pet.

In the past I've owned Macaws, Ferrets, all types of farm animals, so I don't believe this would be to terribly hard for me to learn to take care of.

I've been researching on where and how to buy one, and it certainly isn't easy to find one, and they are quite often a couple thousand dollars.

Anyone ever been up close to one, or experienced one in the wild perhaps?

Everytime you buy an "exotic pet", you're helping destroy forests, leading species to extinction, fostering illegal armed groups in developing countries, encouraging money laundering and even helping kill people.

    Please don't do it.

This. Exotic and rare animals should be enjoyed in zoos where people with Master's degrees in veterinary science and field experience with these animals can care of them, or in the wild where they are meant to be anyway. Macaws are often bred in captivity in North America so they can be raised as pets without much impact on the environment, but someone would probably have to capture and smuggle an anteater to wherever you are to make it possible for you to own one. Bad news bears.

Maybe something incredibly exotic, but Tamanduas, like Coudimundis, actively bred in domestic environments I believe are perfectly respectable as a pet.

I dont think they will truly ever have a market. I know many of these ant eaters are often discovered injured, or as juveniles, as their habitat is infringed upon in developing areas, which is truly sad- But I would like to think that an exotic pet owner such as myself, are most often taking these animals out of love and for the cause of helping them.

    A.) No Resale

    B.) Potential to educate others

I'm by no means promoting trans border sale of any species including ones that may be considered, or listed as endangered.

You can probably order a Real Doll modeled after him and have all the jiggly fun you can handle.

I would also want a Raccoon as a pet but two problems

    1) They don't exist where I live

    2) they would probably steal all my stuff and leave. :p

Exotic animals aren't really that good as a pets..

Not a good idea . Anteater aren't well suited to be a pet , they belongs to the wild like all exotic pets . Would you like to be kept in a cage ?
There are many exotic pets sanctuaries / shelter in your country that needs volunteers , it might be a good idea for you to check that out . You would be able to spend time and care for all kind of different animals ...icon_smile.gif

Or go to a exotic farm ranch. Animals that are retired from or raised for zoos.

The Tamandua is NOT a giant anteater. It's a lesser anteater.
