    Beware the kiss of death!

Since 2010, 22 men in New York City have become infected with the disease, and 7 died. More than half, 12 of the 22, were living with HIV. There’s a distinct possibility meningitis could develop into a major outbreak, NYC health officials warn, killing many more. So far this year, four men already are infected with meningitis. New York City’s health department is recommending vaccinations for men, regardless of HIV status, who regularly have intimate contact with other men. In December, San Francisco Health officials went as far as to recommend that gay men traveling to NYC get vaccinated.

"“It is a variant of a disease that can go from a fever and headache to a galloping rash and then to death within hours — so quickly that some victims have been found dead in bed before they could even get to a doctor. "

Just go get a vaccine. It's one shot. I got it after I was in NYC during Sandy.

    And if you're immunized?

I kinda thought everyone in North America was. It's part of the standard vaccine package every infant gets, and most adults got it at some point too, or so I thought.

I can just hear all the narrow minded, bible thumping screwballs on the right wing when they find out about this latest health threat against gay men. Oh shit, that is all we need another serious health crisis.

I think you are referring to Hem Influenza Vaccine for children.

The meningitis vaccine is required by some states ( ny ) for college. It is not a routine vaccine unless you are going away to dorm at college or in the military.

There is known case reports of gay men having been colonized by Neisseria Meningitis in the throat without clinical significance. ( on a routine throat culture).

I routinely treat this type of patient and re-screen for the bacteria.

In some gay communities the colonization rate of sexually active Hiv negative gay men can sometimes be as high as 35%.

When the rate is this high the bacteria only needs the 1/1000 person with an immune defect ( absence of a spleen) or sinus defect to allow entry into the brain.

Meniningitis is not typically one of the standard childhood/baby immunizations -- those are polio, measles/mumps, diphtheria/tetanus, chickenpox, and sometimes whooping cough and hepatitis.

I inquired yesterday with my insurer about getting this as I want to have it done ASAP.

Health experts address meningitis death of gay man

"This is not a disease transmittable mainly by sexual contact," said Dr. Parveen Kaur of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

"It's spread by respiratory droplets, which means you can be sitting and having a prolonged conversation with somebody and spread the disease without having sex. It can also be transmitted through saliva and intimate activities."

"Bacterial meningitis inflames the covering of the brain and spinal cord, Kaur said."

"The disease usually starts with a fever, rapidly followed by an intense headache with increased sensitivity to light followed by neck stiffness and a rash, Kaur said. "Out of 100 cases, 10 to 15 people will die, and 11 to 20 will have hearing loss, mental retardation and other neurological damage."

It has also not been determined if the strain in CA is the same strain as the one in NYC. The doctors/scientists are still conducting tests to determine that part.

What the heck? There's a flu strain that causes meningitis? Is meningitis just a set of symptoms (like AIDS) and not a standalone bug (like HIV)?

On further investigation, yes. It's a symptom, nt a disease. It refers to swelling of the rote time barriers in the brain and spinal cord. Also, musclmed was correct, that was the vaccination I was thinking of.

I think I need to visit my doctor. I don't plan on being exposed to this at all, but I don't like messing with the brain. Gotta keep it safe!

Meningitis is swelling of part of the covering of the brain. Several different conditions can cause this, including fungus, bacteria and viruses.

In this case it is a bacteria.

    Neiseria Meningitis
