Danger to Your Wallet - Avoid Dollar (& Thrifty) Rent a car

According to the Times, they have been scamming customers into buying insurance even though the customer has specifically declined insurance. There are apparently 2 class action lawsuits now against Dollar. Looks like you have to read every word of the agreement before you sign it, to make sure they haven't changed it while you were standing there. Since Hertz recently bought Dollar, can we expect the same sort of scamming now from Hertz as well?

Yes, when I read that, I figured they must have recently brought in some managers from the phone company icon_rolleyes.gif

I've always declined insurance. However, you have to read the contract carefully, no matter how long it is.

One contract I read indicated that the renter was in violation if he used any drugs. It didn't say what kind of drugs, so presumably one would be in violation if he drank a cup of coffee.

The last car I rented was from Dollar, and it was the worst rental I've ever had. I didn't get my Internet discount promotion that made me choose Dollar in the first place and they didn't know how to give it to me once I brought it to their attention. The car itself smelled of mold and was disgusting to me. I already vowed to myself to never go back. They did try selling me insurance and I declined.

Eh I always decline insurance and I take photos of the car before hand.

    - Check flyertalk forums for discount codes available at airport rental counters.
    - Always select the cheapest option unless you specifically need a certain size or type of vehicle. It is cheaper to upgrade at the counter.

I've always had the best experience with Enterprise. Any other company I've tried has tried its best to fuck me over.

or creatine, beta alanine, creatine with caffeine...

For those who decline insurance, what do you use instead? Your Visa? (my credit card is Mastercard, my debits are Visa...but even though Visa has rental car damage waiver...I don't think it works the same with debit card?)

I used Thrifty once, never had a issue of charging extra for insurance. I always do my stuff online anyway, so once I'm there they can't charge anything extra because what's on the paper is what I'm paying.

The insurance is never purchased because rental cars are covered throughout the US & Canada with the auto policy for my vehicle. Don't believe the hype about credit card companies providing coverage. The coverage kicks in only after using your personal insurance.

The hard sell for insurance reminds me of a laughable event from last weekend. A $25 data card was purchased for the camera. The checkout clerk offered the option of an extended warranty on the card for $ 2.50. I lost it laughing. The clerk said they had to ask.

I owe my Enterprise agent a blow job...he upgraded me from a Nissan Versa to a Mustang convertible! icon_lol.gif
