Okay I'm a sucker for these Downtown Abbey-like period pieces
But this one has all the bells and whistles

And by Bells and Whistles I mean some really hot men to look at
Not Jeremy Piven .... Not a fan
But he's just fine in this

Watch Mr. Selfridge Preview on PBS. See more from Masterpiece.

But some of the other men are fantastic

    Grégory Fitoussi plays Henri LeClair

I almost fell off my chair when the character of Roddy Temple .... came on the screen
    played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen

I'm going to give it a look. My friend told me the book was kind of a dud, but she'll be watching also

I liked Downton too, but was more than a little put off when they killed the two most likeable characters in the show. Made worse, was that it was apparently done for expedience in the production.

    You might like Boardwalk Empire.
It's the same period, but an entirely different genre.

I caught Episode 1 on Saturday night and fell deeply in love with the story. It's rich, entertaining and completely enveloping. After the first episode was over I realized that I have not been that completely engrossed in a movie or show in a very long time. I am very much enjoying the period story set in London. The costume designers have done a fantastic job.

Jeremy Piven is spot on. I have not been a huge fan of his because of his mostly antic style comedy. However, in this role he's believable as a self guided man taking on the world.

Grégory Fitoussi, what is not to love!!! Great looking with a french accent! And his character is the true artist of the story, brining life to the visions of Mr. Selfridge.

Katherine Kelly pulls off Lady May effortlessly. She is every bit of the woman in power in that time. She knows her place, but knows how to play all the games. I paused last nights episode when she and Ms. Selfridge were sitting on the couch. I could have printed that out as a period correct painting, it was that gorgeous.

    and last but not least...

Oliver Jackson-Cohen, holy mother of God, where did he come from. They put him in suspenders and I about melted. This guy is icing on any man's cake. I will be watching more of his work in the future!

Great cast, great story line, great sets, great costumes. This piece of work is a great find!! If you haven't checked it out yet.. do..

It's no Downton Abbey, but I'll keep watching.

I enjoyed the series, which aired in the UK earlier this year. I would have preferred 'Mr Harrod', but I doubt he was as flamboyant or entertaining as Selfridge.

And I agree O J-C is incredibly telegenic.

A very enjoyable historical drama/series with some great looking men, but not too demanding on the brain! icon_smile.gif

Hat tip to Adam Rothenberg as the rockabilly-looking pinkerton-turned-coroner on Ripper Street.
