I was in Honolulu for a few days on a layover last year, and I went around telling everyone that I had only been to the big island, and would love to see the other islands.....

    icon_redface.gif I felt stupid.

`Honolulus gay bars kind of sucked though. I remember Tequila being the drink special though...

If you want a gay bar vacation go to NY, SF, Dallas, West Hollywood.
You're going to one of the most ecologically beautiful places in the world. As a self proclaimed person who says "I LOVE ROMANCE!"

    You should be asking:
I'm going to Hawaii, What are the best Surf Sites?
I'm going to Hawaii, What are the best places to snorkel?
I'm going to Hawaii, What are the best hikes to take for great views?
I'm going to Hawaii, Should I Sky Dive or take a Glider tour?
I'm going to Hawaii, What is the least touristy spot to get a beer?
I'm going to Hawaii, What's the best place to SCUBA...
Furthermore.. YOU DIDN'T EVEN MENTION WHICH ISLAND!!!!

Save your airfare and find the nearest gay bar next to your home town!!!

I'll be in Kona next week, mostly on business, but i'm trying to squeeze some fun in as well. My understanding is that the waves are small this time of the year, but I still want to go out and ride a few. I also want to get some snorkeling in, seeing the amazing aquatic life. If there is cool gay nightlife, I'd be up for it, but that's not my priority. Any recommendations?

also planning my first trip to Hawaii solo and wondered:

what do people think the best island to go visit is for a solo traveler? I'd like to see as much nature, terrain, etc and also would like to do some snorkeling. Thanks for any constructive suggestions....

I'm taking my first trip in two weeks as well. We planned a hiking sporting trip around the big island, Hawaii. The south west facing Kona waters are calm and spectacular for snorkeling, and it's the island with the active Volcano's.

For gay destinations I'm not much for bars but I do recall hearing that Queens Surf Beach in Waikiki is a popular gay spot and there is also a nude beach that's gay as well, I don't recall the name however. Also I've been told that being gay isn't as much of a thing in Hawaii as it is anywhere else, sure it's got a much friendlier attitude but due to that and the relative size of the islands you shouldn't expect a vibrant gay scene like in mainland metro areas.

Much like everyone else though I'm going to suggest you focus on the unique things the Hawaiian islands has to offer there are many! Manta Ray diving, doorless helicopter tours over the volcano, reef snorkeling, cave exploring are all options I'm pursuing on my trip. icon_smile.gif

Solo and beginner I'd say start off with the big island, Hawaii but if you're experienced and looking for something maybe a bit more remote Kauai might be the option for you. If I ever go back I'm going to Kauai. icon_smile.gif

Also Fusions and LoJax if they are still around.

And seriously, Wang Chung's karaoke bar. Not strictly gay, but a ton of gay guys go there. The owner is an awesome guy and there every weekend.

First trip solo, I'd go to the Kihei/Wailea area in Maui. Little Beach, the nude beach, is a few miles South and you always meet dozens of gay men there. You can even see guys cruising behind it on Google Maps!

The advantage of Maui is that's it's fairly compact. You can drive the whole place in one (exhausting) day, and that's pretty good on a first trip. You can get to see the Seven Sacred Falls, go see the sunrise or sunset on Haleakala, drive out to the Kaanapali coast, surf a little in the South or watch the bigger waves on the North side.

I lived on the Big Island for years, and I absolutely love it. It has everything the other islands have (except a big city) and then some (like a beach with effing GREEN SAND - try that if you are Irish.

First time around, though, the BI is a little huge. Not cross-country huge, but big enough that it's a chore to get from one side to the other. If you want to stay there, though, I would probably stay in Puna, near Kehena Beach. There are several gay B&Bs there, plus some naked volleyball pickup games.

Honolulu, of course, has the gay nightlife (as it were). Personally, I think its gay beach, Queen's Surf, doesn't compare to either Kehena or Little Beach.

Just arrived on the big island. The surf is rather small. But in any case I'm glad to be away from Michigan for a few days, and out in the ocean.

    Thanks!

If you visit the Big Island, and get to the Northwest part, there is agay nude beach near Waialea bay.

gosh in all the times I've been to Hawaii I've never even thought about a gay bar. I can find them at the end of the freeway here in Oz.

Just love the Big Island; but then I love volcanos and Mauna Kea too.

The only place that has any kind of gay nightlife on any of the islands is Honolulu. Even Honolulu's gay nightlife does not compare to any other major city. Hula's is great for a drink after spending the day at Queen's Surf, since it's walking distance, but I would not revolve my trip around it.

Back from Hawai'i. The surf didn't cooperate, but kayaking and diving was great. And manta rays are amazing creatures.
