Is this like paying someone to come out as a gay athlete? Is that right? Are they receiving an endorsement based on their talents or just to cash in on something they really have no control over, their sexuality?

    This is great.

I SO know a few people they could use...too bad I would never throw them under the bus like that.

But still, good for Nike (one of the most powerful companies in the athletic world) for wanting to open that door. Whether the reasoning is to make money or not, they are still showing support, and the more support we as a gay community have, the more likely we are to have our rights sooner.

    From Nike's website: http://nikeinc.com/pages/about-nike-inc
    OUR MISSION:
TO BRING INSPIRATION AND INNOVATION TO EVERY ATHLETE* IN THE WORLD
*IF YOU HAVE A BODY, YOU ARE AN ATHLETE

"Today, Nike continues to seek new and innovative ways to develop superior athletic products, and creative methods to communicate directly with our consumers."

This move seems to me in keeping with their mission statement.

In my opinion, they are trying to send a message to LGBTQ individuals who might be too intimidated to join a sport, that they too can be athletes. They obviously see the financial benefit of marketing to this demographic.

Let's not forget that though the athlete they find may not be the top athlete, he is still an athlete that was good enough to make it to the majors.

It seems logical a sportswear & equipment company would want a gay spokesperson who could attract gay buyers - gays are known as gym rats and sports-oriented, a potential market for Nike.

Now is it offering a bounty, or just waiting to cash-in on any prominent athletes who come out gay for their own reasons? Either way it tells me that being publicly gay is now viewed as potentially profitable, not a career-ender like it once was. I would think that's a good change.

I agree that this is a welcome change in our society.

Now they have to just go anti child labor. Then I might consider buying their products.

They can be as pro gay as they want, but until they move their factories home and stop exploiting children they won't get a dime from me.

I don't blame them. There were the rumored fab 4 just this week and we were all looking with anticipation, until B.A. was like "well I fucked up", and even before that, there were rumors that a Montreal Canadien was looking to come out, and then others before then. Regardless of the money, it is/was a good brand with good quality athletic clothing, so I think that they're doing good by doing this because I think the public is sick of being teased with potential openly gay athletes.

Otherwise just fuck it- may as well learn to tackle and walk onto a D1 football team myself. icon_lol.gif

Disclaimer: yeah that's definitely going to happen. Not.
