I've never been fond of the term, but I believe it's known as 'taking back' the word, or reclaiming it..

Like this: "The term reclaiming refers to an array of theoretical and conventional interpretations of both linguistic and non-linguistic collective acts in which a derogatory sign or signifier is consciously employed by the original target of the derogation, often in a positive or oppositional sense"
    -Melissa Yuen-Ching Chen (199icon_cool.gif

lol, that's a head-full, but I think accurate. Does it actually work? I'm not sure.

also,, I was never taunted with the word queer. I was constantly called "gay" in a negative way for most of my life. Long before the recent use of using gay as stupid..

So should I be pissed about people using the word gay... well, according to the likes of you.. I should. so fuck you and everyone who uses the word gay..

now I am going to go into that corner over there and cry because someone used a word. icon_sad.gificon_sad.gificon_sad.gificon_sad.gificon_sad.gificon_sad.gificon_sad.gif

Same here. I actually refuse to label myself as anything. I often get guys asking me: "Are you gay or bi?". My answer is always the same: "I don't label myself, but I'm attracted to guys if that's what you're asking."

Also, OP, learn some gay history. From wikipedia on the term "queer":

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queer

"The term is generally controversial because it was reappropriated to an extent in the 1990s from its use as an anti-gay epithet. Furthermore, some LGBT people disapprove of using queer as a catch-all because they consider it offensive, derisive or self-deprecating given its continuous use as a form of hate speech. Other LGBT people may avoid queer because they associate it with political radicalism, or simply because they perceive it as the faddish slang of a "younger generation."

One of the most famous attempts by the LGBT community to re-claim the term "queer" was through an organisation called Queer Nation, which was formed in March 1990; a few months later, an influential though anonymous flier was distributed at the New York Gay Pride Parade in June 1990 entitled "Queers Read This".

Because of the context in which it was reclaimed, queer has sociopolitical connotations, and is often preferred by those who are activists; by those who strongly reject traditional gender identities; by those who reject distinct sexual identities such as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and straight; and by those who see themselves as oppressed by the heteronormativity of the larger culture. In this usage it retains the historical connotation of "outside the bounds of normal society" and can be construed as "breaking the rules for sex and gender". It can be preferred because of its ambiguity, which allows "queer"-identifying people to avoid the sometimes strict boundaries that surround other labels. In this context, "queer" is not a synonym for LGBT as it creates a space for "queer" heterosexuals as well as "non-queer" homosexuals.

The term is sometimes capitalized when referring to an identity or community, rather than merely a sexual fact (cf. the capitalized use of Deaf).

In the late 2000s (decade) and early 2010s, a number of internet communities started to use the term 'LGBTQ,' the 'Q' standing for 'queer,' to represent forms of sexuality that fall outside of the original LGBT framework, in order to promote awareness and acceptance of these forms of sexuality. The term has a similar function to that of LGBTI, except LGBTQ focuses on sexuality rather than gender."

Look at all the hate mail , I am glad not to be in the circle anymore , real friendship will never begin playing tag, Get it ? I grew up in a time when men were attracted to men ,Pride in being gay , not an insult label that this younger generation started using , queer is not gay ,queer is most likely a straight man who can not get laid and goes after a gay man to get a blow job ,he will never be serious about a relationship with another man , this new culture is dividing the gay community in the most negative way .now I see why there are hate groups I never seen before . Go for it Guys and girls, it is allot easier to make people hate you and make enemies .

^ Sorry, man, but you're really not making any sense. "Queer" has been in common usage since the 90s and frankly doesn't have the same bad connotations that even "gay" still retains in some circles - sounds more politically progressive due to its early association with ACT-UP and Queer Nation.

I have never heard of men on the d/l getting bjs referred to as "queer" and I don't think usage of the term leads to hate groups.

    I agree with Showme's posts.

To me, "Queer" is (roughly) a reclaimed label for LGBT+ people with a connotation that the person is also political about LGBT+ issues. I tend to see "Queer" generally belonging to the liberationist end of the LGBT+ political spectrum rather than the legitimationist end, though not always so. There's an extensive body of literature on Queer Theory, Queer Politics, Queer Theology etc. It's worth dipping into.

Why reclaim words? Because doing so simply deprives the abusers of power.

If it IS as bad as calling someone a "nigger" then you wouldn't be using any of those words. You would be substituting the word "spic" for the "S-word" and "queer" for the "Q-word"...therefore by the logic of your own sentence, it is not as bad as calling someone the "N-word".

I saw the change in people , I guess you had to be there to understand . !981 was a blow when AIDS killed off so many . what was left looked like a buffet that had been out of food trays after a fush .The gay community is starting over and needs to learn about history . All my friends are dead from that era, I am hiv negative and believe in equality , that includes Harems, Poly and good morals .
