    Thanks for sharing metta8.

Here's a lovely rebuttal, to both the ethnocentric message, and the underlying emphasis on being defined by beauty, even if it is from within...

"Don’t let your happiness be dependent on something so fickle and cruel and trivial. You should feel beautiful, and Dove was right about one thing: you are more beautiful than you know. But please, please hear me: you are so, so much more than beautiful."

Interesting. Her perspective is very much what I thought.

Nice, but how did the 'stranger' who gave the account of the subject describe her so accurately? I know it's forensics, and he's the expert in the right questions etc, but the 'beautiful' shot was almost too close.

Regardless, and even if he drew from a photo or real, the message isn't lost. Good on Dove.

This thing has been blown up on Facebook with people saying dumb shit like, "made me cry"... if this makes you cry you have got to be one seriously emotionally immature individual. Srsly.

Well honestly the second person is trying to describe them from memory. Normally you know your own facial flaws a lot better than someone briefly meeting you.

I personally didn't find it that mind blowing. Who is to say the artist did not intentionally make the second drawing more appealing?

This is exactly what I always try to tell others, that people are a lot better than what they think they are.
    Thanks for sharing :-)

I think the point is that most people don't see flaws as easily as we do when it comes to ourselves. And I doubt all people are 100% happy with themselves. It is possible that the artist tried to make it more appealing, but if you notice, the better picture wasn't like drop-dead gorgeous, it was just better. And again, it's all based on descriptions and nothing else.

Okay, So a lot of people have been posting about this "Real Beauty" commercial that Dove has come out with. For years Dove has been trying to brand itself as a company that wants to promote self love and self acceptance among women, and sadly it looks like it's starting to work. So before you share Dove's "Real Beauty Sketches" Ad, there is another one that you should should probably see, and remember that these ads are made by the same people. Dove/Unilever does not care about women, or how they feel. It is just as comfortable capitalizing making you feel uncomfortable with who you are as it is telling you to love yourself.

    Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

And it doesn't make a bit of difference to me that it's a commercial message. I can separate the insight of the writer/director from the product they are trying to sell, which often bears no relation the way it's marketed.

And yes, I cried too, a little.

    I agree.

Regardless of Dove's involvement, the video does make an important point. Often we are our own worst enemy, viewing ourselves in a much more harsh and critical manner than others do. It was interesting how these women's perceived physical flaws did not even register to the stranger viewing them.
