Over the last 20 years, it appears this month has carried with it a dark side, one that would prove contrary to the idea of the season of spring and rebirth. Lets hope and pray this list does not get any longer.

April 19, 1993: The Waco Siege

Federal agencies including the FBI ended a nearly two-month standoff with heavily-armed Branch Davidians at the Mount Carmel Center, a religious compound just outside of Waco, TX. The massive fire that destroyed the compound also claimed the lives of 76 people.

April 19, 1995: The Oklahoma City Bombing

A large explosion from a rental truck just outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma claimed the lives of 168 people, 19 of whom were children being cared for at a day care center within the building. Co conspirators Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were eventually convicted of the domestic terror act, Nichols with well over 150 life terms and McVeigh executed in 2001.

April 20, 1999: The Columbine School Shooting

Two high school seniors, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris walked into their high school cafeteria in Littleton, Colorado and went on a shooting and bombing rampage that killed 12 students and one teacher before killing themselves. More than 20 others in the school were injured.

April 16, 2007: The Virginia Tech Massacre

A lone gunman by the name of Seung-Hui Cho walked into a residence hall on the VT campus with a 9 mm pistol and .22-caliber handgun and killed two people. A few hours later law enforcement responded to an emergency call that shots had been fired at Norris Hall, a classroom building belonging to the engineering department. In all, 33 people were shot and killed, including the gunman.

April 15, 2013: The Boston Marathon Bombings

Twin blasts went off within a minute of each other near the end of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street in downtown Boston leaving 3 dead, 13 with amputated limbs, and 183 total hospitalized. Those responsible still remain unidentified.

Now, the point of posting this is NOT to say these are all connected, in fact, many of them are not (however, some of them may be, for example McVeigh may have done what he did in 'retaliation' to the federal agencies' actions during the Waco incident). Ultimately, I personally like to keep track of dates of events (because I'm a genuine nerd) , and I have noticed a cluster of violent activity often occurring around the middle of April. Strange.
