Vomiting blood

I had a bit too much beer and vodka oranges at a party last night and puked. Vomited again a little later while brushing my teeth at home. The second time maybe 1/3 of it was a dark red.

I generally don't drink much, and have always been "mentally sober" even when I feel sleepy after, say, 5 beers and half a dozen shots. It was the case last night, except for the puking. Might have been the combination of liquor.

Anyhow I slept fine, and woke up bright and early the next day feeling great.

Except googling the symptoms made it seem like a medical emergency. Is it really?

Let's see....you're bleeding and you don't know where the source is. So yeah, as Harry7785 said, go see a doctor! It may not be an emergency, but it's definitely a concern.

Yes, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract wherein you actually see large amounts of red blood coming out of your body is a medical emergency, and as other posters have stated, warrants prompt medical attention in a hospital. The best way to get to the source of the bleeding is having a procedure called an EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) in which a camera on a tube is inserted through the mouth down the esophagus into the stomach and the first portion of the small intestine (duodenum). The doc will inspect for any active bleeding sources.

If the bleeding occurred after drinking large amounts of alcohol, it could be due to gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) which can result in ulceration. In some cases the bleeding can be slowed with injections of epinephrine that cause bleeding stomach vessels to contract. Since the bleeding was noted after you vomited the second time, it is also possible that the act of vomiting resulted in a tear in your esophagus; this seems less likely if you were feeling well the day after.

If you continue to have any GI bleeding, the next symptom you'll develop is black stools. Any blood in your GI tract will be digested as it passes through your body, resulting in black, tarry stools (melena is the medical term), however if the bleeding is brisk, you'll see red blood in your stool as well. If you have any further bleeding, or if you're feeling dizzy, short of breath, or have any chest pain (symptoms of profound blood loss), you need to get to an emergency room asap. If I were you, I'd go the ER now and get checked out regardless of how well you feel.

I'm a doctor. Well...I have a PhD in Psychology. So, that at least makes me a good thinker. icon_biggrin.gif And I think you should go see a medical doctor. It could be nothing. It might be something.

This happened to me last night (first time). It wasn't a lot of blood, though. This is why I don't drink. I'm such a light weight and not really fond of it. Over the course of the night I had like 1 beer, 2 small magaritas, a teq shot, and half a vodka tonic and I was done in icon_redface.gif. I need to find some friends who don't gawk at me when I order water.

If you're still alive, go to the emergency room.

Yes. Go now, as others have advised you. You don't lose points for a false alarm, but you lose your life for not reacting.

An E.R. visit can run $2500, to $15,000...to just show up.

The medical advice given my the medical guy here is likely sound.

If you have a dark stool, or it worsens, you'll want to get it checked out.

Lots of folks are quick to run to the E.R., but, most things can be taken care of at the doctor's office.

Likely, you drank too much, and it's just the oranges / orange juice.

I've hacked up red protein powder, etc.

If you feel weak, you'll need to take action.

You might have caught a bit of food poisoning, but, when you get that you'll usually puke more than twice, and you'll end up with green crap (bile) coming up, with it.

I'm not a doctor, but, lots of folks use the E.R. in the wrong way. If you don't puke, you don't have a dark stool, and you don't feel weak, I'd bet on the oranges.

If you have insurance, most carriers have a med line where you can TALK to a doctor for as little as $15.00. This really isn't a medical forum.

Why anyone would abuse their bodies like that is beyond me, bordering on alcohol poisoning. icon_rolleyes.gif What are you, in high school?? Peer pressure?

    Go to the doctor.

Ok- not to go against the grain....

You most likely strained your throat with all of the vomiting you did and thus caused some small rips. Just stop over doing it and don't drink for a while and you will be fine.

In college I drank a jug of almost an entire bottle of Burnett's cherry vodka mixed with red powerade on halloween night...in an hour and a half. That wasn't pretty coming back up.
