Robert Nielsen, 45, said proudly last year that he had basically been on welfare since 2001.

See Riddler's topic on the Danes. He picked up on the article after this post.

COPENHAGEN — It began as a stunt intended to prove that hardship and poverty still existed in this small, wealthy country, but it backfired badly. Visit a single mother of two on welfare, a liberal member of Parliament goaded a skeptical political opponent, see for yourself how hard it is.

It turned out, however, that life on welfare was not so hard. The 36-year-old single mother, given the pseudonym “Carina” in the news media, had more money to spend than many of the country’s full-time workers. All told, she was getting about $2,700 a month, and she had been on welfare since she was 16.

    .... ****

cj -- Ah, what a glorious life.

This is disgusting. Apparently welfare cheats have become an increasingly serious problems in many European countries just like here in the US. Totally unacceptableicon_mad.gif

It's a problem, but not a particularly large one. Those who would happily deprive everyone of welfare (no names, no pack drill) tend use it as propaganda. Meanwhile, the same people generally turn a blind eye to white collar fraud.

If you think it's such a great life, get rid of everything you have, and trot right down there, and sign up.

Nobody is bat shit crazy about welfare and food stamps. The problem here is that there are many able bodied folks who have been riding the system and living off welfare and food stamps like they are some form of lawful entitlement. That is where the serious problem lays. If you are experiencing economic hardship and need a hand up than welfare is perfectly fine providing it is only temporary. The recipient must use all welfare monies to solve their financial problems and than get back into the workforce ASAP. Welfare is not meant to be a permanent free handout which is unfortunately happening in most first world countries today. Too many so called poor welfare recipients are living a life of first class luxury while all us working/tax paying folk are struggling to make ends meet.
