Who else thinks RealJock long overdue for some upgrades?

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say this site has amazing forums with very knowledgeable people in different areas. I was wondering who could be contacted to talk about or suggest some upgrades?

    For example:

    - A like button: how many comments do you see on here that you just want to like the hell out of... this would also reduce reposting and making threads unnecessarily longer than they should be.

    - A notifications system, alerts: I wish there was a way for you to get notified when someone comments on your thread. Or when someone quotes your comment or wants you to reply to something; it's way easier than having to check on your own, when you might forget to do so.

    - Other updates: I'm sure others have thought of many, many things that would make this site better.

If anyone agrees or has any ideas on how to make this possible, please contribute! I'm sure some of us wouldn't even mind donating some money, I know this site has helped me in many areas of life, not just workouts and gossip

Oh, and if you have other ideas on updates you'd like to see, add them as well, maybe this thread will catch the webmaster's attention icon_smile.gif

Yes! an update would greatly boost people's interaction

1.troll comments can be automatically goes hidden (like in YouTube) if they receive too many -ve votes!

    2. Similarly, the best or most helpful comment should be shown at the top

    3. and an option to report abuse. for hate speech, inappropriate posts etc. (quite similar to my 1st suggestion)

    4. live updates...no need to refresh (like in Facebook, Gmail)

    5. an option to mark mails as unread (to remind us to reply them later)

That's all I can think for now!

It does for sure, but even if it never gets updated that's okay . The site is free to use so we should all be thankful that we don't have to have some type of membership :-)

wouldn't be surprised if the site owners did that in the near future.

Maybe there's not enough in the budget for an upgrade.

RJ previously had a 2-tier membership system - free and paid subscription (which I had). Paid got you a few perks, like being able to optionally block ads. Plus you got a choice of gift, like an RJ T-shirt (I've got 2).

The paid membership was eliminated, for reasons I don't know. Motives may have included having less admin work for the owners, and better advertising revenues when all memberships are free and exposed to the ads.

In any case, having once been a partial paid membership site before becoming all free, I doubt RJ will change back.

This site just needs a proper forum software. vBulletin, Lithium, phpBB.. any of those are better than the home grown software being used currently.

    I miss paid membership icon_sad.gif

I think the forums just need a few tweaks and as a whole the site needs a refresh design wise.

    Otherwise it's mostly functional!

No why do we have to make it like a Facebook? I think all that crap should stay in facebook!! I hated when they added likes and stuff to YouTube

What they need here, and what has bothered me forever is a next message button in the mailbox to easily scroll through messages without having to keep going back to the inbox and clicking on a message individually

But why not make it like Facebook? It's an extremely successful social network for a reason!

Yeah, I can see money being an issue, but between advertising and raising funds online via members who want changes such as us, we can at least work towards a goal. May not be attainable right away but someday!

And I agree, maybe some features should be paid, like being able to hide profile visits, or any other ideas they/we can come up with.

Regarding it having been paid before though, that probably means not enough people paid for a membership, so I think donations may be a better means of upgrading the system, but I could be wrong.

A simple survey asking people if they'd pay monthly or donate every now and than and how much could be a good start. I've seen threads asking if people would pay and quite a few say they would.

I was going to post something witty, but irony is knocking at my door, I'll be right back.

It had knocked so hard on everyone else's door we couldn't even acknowledge his existence.

add a button to create and vote in polls, ive seen this and voted in other forum type websites, instead of posting the question as a forum topic, option to use a poll and have members vote, and maybe add some more emocons, Yahoo mail just updated email with a ton of new emo's, this site is lacking

I think the creators left RJ to its own devices long ago. Probably not much profit in putting much money into it.

See, I can say I've seen that in other sites too, the whole poll thing, so why can't RJ have it?

If the designers/creators let the site drive itself, couldn't they technically appoint Administrators who are willing to add to the site? I'm sure a lot of people here are very tech-savvy and would love to add features they deem appropriate to the site on their spare time. Some people actually enjoy that sort of thing icon_smile.gif

Lots of luck, he won't even trust others to moderate, let alone make technical changes.

A "like" button is too facebook-ish.

Perhaps we could all have a "reputation" rating...and rate someone's posts as either positive or negative-- contributing to the posters rep.

Also, being able to quote multiple posters at once would be nice too.

Other than that, I dunno, seems like any other forum place. It's the people themselves that make it a great forum to be honest.

But then again that whole 'rep' thing is exactly what bodybuilding.com has, which is a great idea IMO, but if people wanted to deviate from the norm, this wouldn't work, because this would seem like a bodybuilding.com wanna-be.
Then again like I said, I don't see why using systems from other sites that people love would be bad.
