How distracting is your gym?

On my way home from work tonight, I heard an add on the radio for one of the new gyms that just opened up around my area. They were leaning very heavily on the face that they have small TV's on every exercise bike/tredmill/cardio machine, and theyeven said they had a theater room so you can watch whatever movie they are playing while you work out.

This, in my opinion, seems like alot of extra fluff to add to a gym. I could understand personal radios or music players on certain machines, but wouldn't watching tv/movies kinda lead to distraction from putting your all into a workout?

Meh, maybe it's just me. I'll stick with my iPod over TV anyday. Besides, nothing really good on TV nowdays hehe.

there is a few tv's in my gym, I think they play music videos or something and adds *shrugs* I never really pay attention to them, I have my itty bitty red shuffle on and I don't hear anythign else, except for the guy screaming his lunges out and the fella who keeps dropping the 80kilos when he gets to the top of his dead lift.

The only thing that I find distracting though is when guys start giving me funny looks cause my arse was just moving side to side with the music icon_biggrin.gif

If one is enjoying the book he or she is reading or enjoying the show he or she is watching on the TV (small or big) then you are not exercising hard enough.

Sometimes I ride the rollers in front of the TV. You spin during the show and sprint during commercials. Then there's Trek games. If Spock raises an eyebrow, you have to sprint for a minute. If Kirk takes off his shirt. If Bones says somebody is dead... Well, you get the picture.

If you can't use your brain for something during cardio, you're not thinking hard enough.

I like the cardio equipment with the TVs. I hate cardio and it makes it easier for me to get through it, I just keep an eye on my rpms (I only use elliptical) to make sure I am keep it up. While I am actually working out, I don't need TVs or anything but my music, but for cardio I need something to keep my brain from realizing what I am doing.

in my gym, the treadmill tv screens are sooo close to your face that it is hard to jog/run comfortably while watching TV. I tend to keep the television off when i do my cardio and focus on my suffering.

and i agree with the OP, there really isn't anything good to watch on television... 'cept maybe sports.

See, this is what I EXPECTED this topic to be about...

My gym got bought up by another chain last year, so I can use any of their locations and have tried about 6 of them. Some of them are still quite old school, with dumbbells and barbells old enough that the poundage on the side is faded off. The push, though, is to get them all up to the cushy suburban model with a tv attached to every piece of cardio equipment---which is no good anyway really, since they play crap music at full volume so there's no way you can hear your personal tv even with noise-blocking earphones.

The men are also a distraction at a few locations... One of the locations has 3 trainers who compete, and 2 of whom have won their classes at FAME over the last two years; at another location there is one member who's got a sponsorship deal and is actually featured in a supplement company's adds in Muscle & Fitness and Fitness Rx for Men. Plus an assortment of models, dancers, escorts...

No, none of that stuff bothers me at all. I have my headphones on doing my thing and practically nothing can take me out of my zone....except this one guy. He is so attractive and unbelievably well-built that I've had to leave early more than once because I got so frustrated and distracted icon_redface.gif He still seems really cool around me so I must be hiding it pretty well....ha.

My gym has the TV's, Video room, etc. I agree that maybe the people who watch these TV's are not working out hard enough, but at least they are working out. It beats being a couch potato and then complaining about being fat. icon_biggrin.gif

The main distraction (motivation??) at my gym are the hot guys. They motivate me much more than any TV show possibly could.

I just have to watch out for the moving cars. Otherwise, no distractions.

OMG! The most distracting as well irritating thing is when some of the members are talking on their cells phones..come on! icon_rolleyes.gif

My phone is always in my locker that's if I even decide to bring it with me at all.

If I go during lunchtime, some of the women wearing a full-on Tammy Faye as they run/walk and talk on the phone is a bit distracting.

If I go at night, the group of "Those Three Guys" (you know the type, every gym has them) working out together, yelling ("Come on motherfucker!"), and dropping weights is a distraction.

If I go in the morning, the vapidity displayed by the anchors on that show with Matt Lauer is distracting (or Meridith Verida's lack of ease in front of a camera).

Maybe They are just distracted by your cute lil arse and not the swaying motion. But I guess that could add to the effect icon_wink.gif

I can see having the TV's in front of the Cardio Machines. Personally I just get distracted by some of the guys themselves at the gym. Though my Gym doesn't seem to have that much of a problem. However this week I am house sitting for a friend and have been going to his Gym instead. Well I have been wayy too distracted. And it's not by the TV's I just use my Zune to drown out the sounds of them and the grunting of the men.

There is a TV on every piece of cardio equipment at mine... and its not distracting at all.

Gives me something to look at instead of a blank wall - and its a look, not watch and absorb. I generally have mine tuned to Fox8 so it's all Simpson's reruns and family guy that I have seen before. Nothing in depth or serious.

If you can't look at a TV and work out at full capacity does that make you like those idiots that can't walk and chew gum at the same time?

I like watching tv when I am doing my cardio, I'm still working hard but not paying attention to what I am doing.
