Would you join a gay gym? Have you?

I'll have the opportunity to join a "gay" gym in about 2 months. It's predecessor recently closed and the facility is being reopened by new owners. The old one was badly managed and getting run down, why I didn't use it, though extremely convenient to me, just a walk or bike ride.

But the old one was almost entirely gay (though not a requirement for membership) in the heart of ultra-gay Wilton Manors, Florida, and we all expect the new one will be just as gay.

Now the financial viability of the reopened place is obviously a separate issue I also have to consider, and how the place looks, the equipment, etc. But I've never belonged to a mostly gay gym, and I wonder if there are pros and cons I can't imagine from my lack of experience with one.

As for myself I'm 59 and not in great shape because of my disabilities. My workouts are really more physical therapy to deal with my injuries & arthritis, and to control my weight and preserve what shape I have left.

So it occurs to me I'll get snubbed and laughed at by the young gym rats, more so than down at the Y. But I'll also get to look at the young gym rats, rather than the leotard ladies at the Y. The old gym had an entirely male membership to my knowledge. I have a partner, BTW, and we don't cheat, so it really would be just eye candy, plus I'm really just more comfortable around gay men, rather than straight.

    Any thoughts and personal experiences?

I work out at a Corporate fitness center where I am employed and my best buddy in NYC tells me I'm really missing out on huge social opportunity by NOT belonging to a "gayer" gym.
There is probably something to be said for the "community" aspects of a primarily gay crowd; so long as it doesn't distract from the workouts.
I've heard of some gay gyms that sounded more like bath houses. A little flirting in the locker room is one thing, but if there is full on sex in the sauna, then I'd be out!

where is wilton manors in FL? I was from Miami and now belong to a gay majority gym in Lakeview IL. In Miami my ex bf was a member of a South Beach gym. No big deal there were hot guys in there good eye candy but in the end I was there to work out.

Wilton Manors adjoins Fort Lauderdale to the south and Oakland Park to the north, about 35 miles from Miami. Not too large, but a real town with a mayor, not a private gated community or condo complex as the name sometimes suggests.

And we believe it currently has the highest gay residency ratio in Florida right now. Rainbow flags fly everywhere, most stores & restaurants I use there are gay owned, and PDAs are commonplace. So any gym in Wilton Manors is gonna be largely gay by default.

No, I wouldn't. I know I am going to get beat down for saying this BUT in my experience the gay men are always the ones that are there for every reason other than actually lifting weights (i.e. talking on cell phones, sitting on equipment when they are not using it, talking to much in general...blah blah blah) I would rather just go to a gym where the guys are there to actually work out. I can hit up a bar if I feel the need to socialize.

Thanks for confirming my statement above about WM. It really is Gay Central for South Florida these days. But of course things change with time, and other places have been Gayville before WM, and eventually some other city will take that honor away.

Thanks also for that observation about gays in gyms. That's the sort of thing I hadn't thought about, and why I was seeking advice. It would certainly make sense, tracking with what I've seen of the other gays I know here.

And it would indeed infuriate me if the other gym members didn't follow good gym etiquette, and broke up my routine with their lack of attention to the purpose at hand. And I hate cell phones at the wrong time & place.

Turn it off, or if the call is important, take the call in private somewhere. I don't want to overhear your private business, nor your loud, distracting talking, because cell phones seem to make people always want to shout on them.

Thanks again for those thoughts to consider.

if you have no intention of taking it further than eye candy does it matter whether the gym is predominantly straight or gay?

OMG! YES! The gym that I used to belong to was gay until it closed.
Now most gym are supposedly gay friendly. I'm frantically searching for a new one!

I used to be an advocate of joining a less gay gym but I've changed my mind. There wasn't any single reason I started going to a gay-friendly gym (in Chelsea) but I think I realised that I was, at base, more comfortable knowing that most of the guys around me were gay. So, if you checked someone out, it wasn't a big deal either way.

And as I've become more settled in New York, I've found it nice that I know people when I go to the gym-- friends I've met in bars or through other friends, that sort of thing. I don't stand around and talk, really, but it's nice to wave hello.

Plus, I find my workouts more inspiring. I like the eye candy and being checked out too. It's a nice way to spend a couple hours in the evening.

I go to workout and get away.

So it does not really matter which gym I would go to. I would probably choose the closer and cheaper one if they were basicially the same equiptment and personnel wise.

Yes! Because eye candy has gotta be better in a gay gym than what I see at the Y, and no women at all to dilute the scenery. This reopening gym is right next to a very popular gay restaurant's outdoor patio where I often have lunch. And I'd see this stream of buff guys going into the old gym before it closed, much better than the Y crowd.

If it hadn't been for rumors I'd heard for over a year that it was failing and going to close, which it did, I'd have become a member. Now I want to consider joining the new gym there, if I'm otherwise satisfied with their stability & quality.

I wouldn't seek out a gym that specifically catered to gay individuals. Give me a gym where I can get my workouts done within 2 hours, that's clean, and has ample equipment and space...you've got a happy man!

Depending on which location of LA Fitness I go to, it seems as if I do belong to a gay gym. You expect to have guys cruise you in the "gay areas" of Atlanta, but I find that there is more overt "sexually forward" activity in the "closet case" areas. Since I am swimming most of the time, I don't see the activity while working out. But the locker room, shower, and sauna can be an issue. I use the I candy as incentive, and as I notice guys cruising me more, I realize my work is paying off. icon_cool.gif

... but wouldn't there be lesbians joining as well? Never joined a gay gym and quite honestly I'd prolly be even MORE self-conscious if I knew every guy in the gym is gay.

I live in Ft. Lauderdale also and ArmWrestler is right, all the gyms in the area are gay gyms.
I've worked out at the gym you are referring to a few times. When i was there it had a mix of ages and fitness levels. It was predominantly gay men but there were a few females as well. There is a social/cruisy element but you can also just put your headphones on and work out.
I say if it is the most convenient and the price is right go for it.

I didn't even know we had a Y in the area.

Closest I ever got was the West Side YMCA in New York City.
Cruisiest place I have ever been to in my life; alternated between liking it and hating it.

Would I do it again? Ask me if I am ever single in New York again....

I've been going to gyms since high school - mostly school or university gyms - and for me - the best ones were the least "glamorous" places. I go there to work - hard. I like working out with guys who are seriously into it - little chit-chat, no sitting around, no matching outfits, no fixing hair in the mirrors, no using mirrors to check out all the "I-candy". Another thing I can do without are women checking us out - shopping for husbands - trying to make eye contact or start little conversations. Good, old, industrial gyms with free weights are my favorites!

I personally did not care if the gym specifically catered to gay people. It actually made me feel a bit uncomfortable at times. Especially when the guy across from you in the showers had a hard-on. I was there to work out, if I wanted a pick-up I would have gone to a bar or bathhouse!

No I wouldn't. I'm there to workout not pick up so why would it matter? If it was the closest gym to my house I might consider it. I think i'd find it more distracting and less benifical then a regular gym thou.

I also worked out in the Gay Gym that Red Vespa was alking about
A gay gym has its advantages
Great looking guys you can get anywhere
it's more of a friendlier atmosphere
You don't have to be aware of who you look at or of what you might say

But.... it has its drawbacks too
    anybody wanna say Catty?
Sometimes it's like a Sorority House packed with Home Coming Queens
This one said this about that one and this one did this to ME!!
    icon_rolleyes.gif

Glad the gym is opening up again but I couldn't take it anymore than part time

The name at the time of closing was "Main Street Gym" and was located right next to Georgie's Alibi. A new name has not been announced, nor an opening date.
