I agree, we should not be going through this every year...

The National Day of Prayer (36 U.S.C. ยง 119)[1] is an annual day of observance held on the first Thursday of May, designated by the United States Congress, when people are asked "to turn to God in prayer and meditation". Each year since its inception, the president has signed a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.[2] The modern law formalizing its annual observance was enacted in 1952.

The constitutionality of the law that established the National Day of Prayer is currently under challenge by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF). In April 2011, a three-judge panel of a federal appellate court ruled that FFRF lacked standing, and, without addressing the law's constitutionality, unanimously overturned a previous court's ruling that it was unconstitutional. FRFF immediately appealed the decision

For background, the Chair of the National Day of Prayer organization is Shirley Dobson, wife of James Dobson, the founder of Family Talk radio, a virulently anti-gay media outlet. This pastor Laurie has been a guest on Dobson's radio program, where's he's stated his inflammatory anti-gay views. This whole thing seems a bit incestuous to me, and I do hope the Obama Administration expresses concern for the activities at the Pentagon, if not canceling them. The Republican-led House will of course welcome Laurie with open arms and standing ovations.

As a Christian, I find this repellant. These people do NOT stand for all Christians, and to pick such a bigot is an insult to more than just the LGBT community.

The National Day of Prayer Committee, of which James Dobson's wife is the Chair, was given control of the event by President Reagan in 1982. It has always been composed of Christian fundamentalists. Therefore the agenda is Christian fundamentalist, even though the concept is supposed to be multi-denominational, a sort of "pan-religious" event.

But even so, the endorsement of the US government for ANY religious ceremony may violate the US Constitution. Court cases are still being heard on challenges to this national prayer day. How about a National Atheists Day?
