What is your experience with the Big 3..? I was a long time Bally's member until they closed shop in my city and sold out to Blast who has now gone belly up...so now I work out at home occasionally....too many distractions to remain focused.

I have 24 hour and LA fitness in my area...which is better ?

I have memberships at LA Fitness, World and 24 Hour.

It kind of depends what you are going for. If the 24 Hour Fitness in your area is truly 24 hours a day, it makes for no excuses for hitting the gym, but, many 24 aren't open 24.

Most 24, in my experience, have issues with maintenance, lighting, cooling, and not being clean.

Most LA Fitness are well lit, well cooled, well maintained, modern equipment, and very clean (the bathrooms get hosed down at least once a day). I would highly recommend LA Fitness to everyone.

World gym is nice; the price is right, but, some gyms lack a full array of ancillary equipment (say stretching), and many don't have independent movement machines like LA.

I've been to Gold's a number of times, and most are nice, and kept up pretty well.

If money is no object, Lifetime Fitness is THE country club, with stellar everything.

I found Equinox snobby, and expensive, and rude.

You really just need to sign up and try them. Things will be come apparent after a week or two. icon_biggrin.gif

I've been a member of several 24-hr fits across two states and even in the same city and gym chain, things aren't the same. It's a business decision based on regional competition and attendance.

For the record, I have yet to find a disappointing "24 hr Super Sport" period. That usually implies a pool and hot tub. But, if you equip a regular "Sport" with a pool/spa, the dampness causes noticeable maintenance problems unless they run the air conditioning to dehumidify. Damp smell everywhere and the locker room looks...unfortunate.

Recently moved to the LA area, I am closest to an LA fitness, but I have so many problems with them and Golds, it's a non-starter.

On the other hand, a new 24hr fit sport opened up in the area and at 5pm, it is so crowded there's a mob of people standing in the center of it waiting to get on a machine, passing time with their smartphones. Sigh, back to the supersport that's 8 miles away.

Only drawback to a 24hr that almost never closes is I found myself procrastinating and running in at odd hours. Strange how the crowd arrives at 4AM, just as I was about to leave once or twice. icon_eek.gif

On a side note, visited a new Fontana, CA 24hr Super Sport today (Sunday). It's a 9 mile commute through construction on I-10. But, can't wait to see that place during a 5pm rush hour. It was similar in size to the Target store nearby. icon_eek.gif

In my experience: 24Hr is the McDonald's of gyms. Price point is cheap, gyms are huge, dirty, crowded, and broken down. Almost not worth keeping the lifetime all-clubs membership I bought a decade ago.

lol, so succinctly put. Everybody and their mom's mom gay mother goes to 24 hour. I don't hate on anyone who does, but I went to one in my area and didn't like it much. too crowded and the people there were ABNOXIOUS. Tried it for 1 day and went back to Bally. It was like being the new kid in school and I HATED that feeling lol.

It still saddens me that Bally had to downsize like it did. They have em still in Colorado, LA/SF, New Orleans and all over the northeast. It's a quiet gym up until rush hour, prices are cheaper than 24 and LA,and most of the ones I went to were clean.

I use LA Fitness, the gyms I have hit are all clean, have newer equipment and are well maintained. They open early and are open till midnight except on the weekends. I find it nice because I usually beat the crowd by going in early or after 8pm. Plus its not super expensive.

I'm a member of 24 hour. I haven't tried out the others but I will say that unless the 24 hour is a "super sport," it's going to pretty much be a basic gym. It gets ridiculously crowded at mine and once machines are broken it seems like they are never fixed or replaced. But, it's a gym and it's open 24 hours sooo.. I continue to put up with their shit. lol

I have been going to 24 Hour for 7 years. I think the local management is the key. Mine is always clean. Equipment well maintained and repaired promptly. When I have had a problem, I talk to the manager and they seem to respond.

My friend had a lifetime Bally's membership and is able to use it at LA Fitness for the same (insanely low) price he was paying at Bally's. If you paid a lot for your Bally's membersihip it might be/have been worth it to bring that up when speaking to LAF.

I use NYSC which you didn't mention, having gone to Gold's and Powerhouse among others in the past.
