    I'll upset a few apple carts with this I am certain.

    But I find Beyonce over rated, very!
    Any other singers you find fit the category?

    As far as a singer (and sure take my Gay card)
    I'll throw in Britney Spears as well -- she might be a great entertainer, but singer... I don't see it.
    And even as an entertainer, she seems to lack originality and instead just revisits what she has already done, all of here videos are just like the one before.

    Who do you think is over rated in the music industry?

    Over rated singers?

    In terms of the songs:

    - Britney Spears;
    - Mariah Carey;
    - Beyonce;
    - Rihanna;
    - Fergie.

    Mariah Carey has a very good voice, but the songs are forgettable. Beyonce's latest song is not half-bad but overall I don't think her music will last (unlike Alicia Keys or somebody like Aretha Franklin from the past).

    Britney Spears' claim to fame is her first big hit "Baby One More Time" which was a catchy pop song, and her soap opera like family life. Her latest song "Womanizer" hit #1 on Billboard, but I don't think it will go down as a classic by any means.

    I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Madonna. I think describing her voice as average would be kind.

    Bob Dylan is an amazing songwriter but listening to his voice for more than 20 minutes would cause me to do a serious search for the razor blades.

    Other female singers that are over-rated.

    - Whitney Houston (great voice, mediocre music);
    - Celine Dion (ditto, has a tendency to over sing);

    Female voices that are now silent but wonderful.

    - Dusty Springfield (Dusty in Memphis is an amazing album);
    - Karen Carpenter (very distinctive);
    - Tammi Terrell (duets with Marvin Gaye in the 1960s were great).

    Female singers that are still with us but are under-played.

    - Gladys Knight;
    - Dionne Warwick;
    - Roberta Flack;
    - Diana Ross;
    - Stevie Nicks.

    I agree, but it has improved, and her music is much more interesting and entertaining then others that are popular (like Ms. Carey. whose voice my best friend once described as sounding like a tea kettle going off).

    Sealion Dion is a club singer who had good management.

    As did Shania Twain.

    It's sort of useless to even rate their "singing" because with artists like Madonna, Beyonce, Rihanna, Britney, and so many others it is about so much MORE than the singing -- it's about the dancing, the visuals, images via videos, and marketing -- and that's okay because I enjoy all of the above mentioned for just what they are -- great entertainers, and good at what they do.

    Well, Madonna in concert is like watching a lip-synching robot so i don't agree with her being great a entertainer.

    I just saw Madonna in concert on Sunday night in Toronto, so I beg to differ. She is one of the great entertainers when it comes to the overall show and production values -- worth every cent of the price of admission -- and, again, it has never been about the "singing" when it comes to Madonna. She was not lipsynching although, admittedly, there were times during the show when I wished she were. Still, an amazing show, and there will never be another artist quite like Madonna.

    Unfortunately there are A LOT of over-rated entertainers out there! And on the flip side there a a TON of artists out there that can sing like nobody's business and have not "hit" and maybe that's good because that's when the music lives on.

    Although rather over-rated, people like Mariah, Madonna, Janet, Sheryl Crow, Beyonce and several others they write, produce a lot if not ALL of their stuff or have a strong hand in their stuff and that's pretty damn impressive in general! And after a while the legit ones become over rated due to media saturation, for me personally people like Mariah I tend to lean towards tracks that are never released to radio from her CD's, I believe her BEST stuff are those particular tracks and I HOPE that as she grows/matures/ages she allows her music to evolve 'cause when she does Jazzy type of music that woman is AMAZING!! For now I'm content to be entertained and let it be what it's meant to be. Beyonce at times comes across as selling us her at times CRAP music; she's a great entertainer and can put on a HELL of a show but she ain't all that!

    The one that I am waiting for to really set it off is Christina Aguilera! I LOVE that she has definitely separated herself from Britney! Britney's fun and surely for the moment however Christina has the potential to be around for a LONG time as well as her music!!!

    I agree with all three. But I must admit I would not throw any of them out of bed. I think there is someone on RJ that compared to Usher to one of the ninja turtles! I cannot remember who it was though.

    You have to group these artists into 2 categories. Singers and Entertainers.

    Britney, Madonna, Kylie -- They are Entertainers

    Mariah, Beyonce, Alicia, -- They are singers

    Beyonce does have an amazing voice. Her first album was amazing. I think her second sounded very rushed and over produced. Her 2 new songs seem to give me a mix of both. "If I Were A Boy" sounds very controlled and well done, but "Single Ladies" sounds like another slapped together club song.

    How about Patrick Stump? Ever heard him live? He's horrible, like finger nails on chalkboard.

    And as for things being overrated, I was pumped that i was going to come in and start a flame war over how overrated Scarface and The Godfather are, to bad the topic was music..

    Madonna only ever lipsanc TV performances that called for it, like American BandStand. If you saw a concert performance of hers, she was NOT lipsyncing. Even her brother stated that she has always refused to lipsync during concert performances in his supposed tell all book.
    FURHTERMORE it is evidenced that Madonna doesn't lipsync by the numerous times she will mess up while singining and will make it known. Don't get it twisted Red!

    As is evidenced at about 2:50 into this Youtube segment!

    I liked Umbrella the first 1,000 times I heard it. Now, the sound of Rihanna attempting to sing even will cause my cat to put her paws over her ears. There is a huge difference between singing and entertaining, and unfortunately, our mass consumption, fast food world tends to prefer the "entertainment" factor. There's no denying Madonna puts on the best stage shows ever, but if she wasn't able to pull that off...would she have made it on singing alone? Probably not. I love her as much as the next fag, but I'm old enough to remember her very early days, and she 'made it' thanks to MTV and being incredibly smart in her use of the media/shock value. Yes, kids, in 1983 her rolling around in the Burning Up video was 'shocking' for the time. Live Aid in 1985 didn't want her...the producers believing she was nothing more than "a disco dolly who'd quickly disappear." It's ok to admit her singing is average. She's still around and selling out venues 26 years after Everybody, so she is a musical icon.
