This should be a hoot. I can only think having Phelps' group there representing the anti-gay side will sway people away from their side. With a message that is wrapped in blatant, undisguised hatred, I would hope people will see those who oppose gay marriage aren't really in favor of "protecting marriage" so much as they are for abusing and mistreating gay people in any way they can.

Anti-gay church to participate in debate on gay marriage ban

A church known for spewing anti-gay rhetoric and picketing military funerals is slated to debate a state marriage amendment at a forum next week at Florida International University.

The Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church accepted an invitation from the Stonewall Legal Alliance, a gay group at the FIU College of Law. The debate will focus on Amendment 2, the initiative on the Nov. 4 ballot that would add Florida's existing ban on same-sex marriage to the state constitution.

The visit has raised concerns from people on both sides of the marriage debate.

Yeah they will really be constructive in the debate. Like inviting neo-nazis to a discussion on anti-semitism. Honestly what are people thinking these days.

Yeah really. I have done a bit of research on that church (which is really just one family it seems). They are very smart (in a narrow sense of the term) and educated people (mostly lawyers) who are very good at getting themseleves media attention and gigs like this.

One tiny family who gets attention that is orders of magnitude disproportionate to their numbers.

Why did they invite them?? That's stupid. This will help no one but the Phelps themselves.

Oh, man, I can't wait for the YouTubes on this thing. It'll be even better than watching Sarah Palin videos or listening to Focus on the Family on Sirius. When it comes to comedy, nothing beats parody except for the real thing.

I think that it is good for Phelps to be there....it will really show up the lunacy of the anti-gay argument and perhaps drive moderates and independents to vote against the ban

The debate committee had invited a more sane group to represent the opposing side, but they declined. The Phelps clan was the alternative, and you know they'll never decline a chance to get in front of cameras.

I think they'll do as much to sway the crowd in favor of gay marriage as the pro-marriage side will.

Hey lets reverse the table and all the gays in Florida go to their meeting and stand outside meeting place with signs and loud speakers.
"You are all snakes and vipers beautiful and white on the outside but inside you are full of dead mens bones"
This is a quote from the bible that Jesus used to the selfrightous in his day.
but he drove them out of the church with a whip in his hand.

    "Well isn't that Special"

The only difference between Janet L. Folger at Faith2Action, a proponent of Amendment 2, and the two Phelps sisters invited to attend the debate? LIPSTICK!!!

Remove the veneer of a coifed hairdo, the haute couture and the refined and well rehearsed false argument that Amendment 2 is only about protecting the sanctity of marriage from the likes of Janet Folger & those of her ilk, what do you have? Shirley & Margie Phelps!!!

The offer to participate was made by the debate organizers to numerous, more ‘mainstream’ of the Amendment 2 Supporters but alas, they declined.

So now we get to see the debate framed in its proper context: Hate & Homophobia at the expense of the thousands of Senior citizens who’ll be hurt by Amendment 2 vs. sound legal arguments defending the equality of all citizens of the State of Florida. Sounds like a great debate! I’ll be there!

I think it's frikkin' brilliant. It rips away the pretty "we still love gays, we just want to defend the sanctity of marriage" mask the Yes on 2 (or 8 or 102) folks are trying to put on the measure, exposing the ugly, ugly bigotry beneath.
