immediately boycott anti-gay "stuff" ?

So I'm wondering people's opinions on how you react to certain things-

for those of you who are unaware Fantasia Barrino tweeted some pretty anti gay messages about a week ago - right before her new album dropped. The album is sick and flawless but because of the tweets would that cause you to stop listening to her/an artist/ect.

same thing happened not to long ago with Target.. the CEO was found contributing to anti-gay campaigns - and a lot of my gay friends allegedly stopped shopping there because of it

    what do you/would you do?

[p.s i cant take the album off repeat so i guess you know my response lol ]

You bought it already (assuming you bought it) so throwing it out now isn't going to make much of an impact on her.

However, you could make yourself feel better about it by contacting and telling her that you're a fan of her music but not so much the message she's putting out there.

For me, if I know someone has made anti-gay statements, I don't give them my money. But I do the same for someone who makes statements that are racist or putting down different ethnicities, abilities, etc. There's just no call for that and -- if you're trying to sell a product that is not related to a political stance -- it's bad business.

Who's Fantasia Barrino? icon_redface.gif *Googles* Some random singer.. Who cares what she thinks? I see no reason why can't still enjoy her music, but if I were you and a singer that I liked stated something homophobic, I would probably stop being a fan right on the spot.

I try to boycott any person/company/product that would like to see me dead and/or miserable. Why not? There are always alternatives. And this expressly includes donors to political campaigns/candidates/causes that want to harm me or see an advantage to their own power base by harming me. And I will strike back whenever possible as in the case of organized hatred usually called religion. I think it is time to stop subsidizing religion with my money in the form of tax exemptions.

And yes, this also applies to all of the above that seek to harm others, as in blacks, minorities, etc.

it sort of depends ... What exactly did she tweet ... I've liked a song or 2 by her, but I would never go out of my way to actually pay money for her music and I never monetarily support anyone that I know for a fact is anti gay.

You don't have to throw the CD away or feel bad about enjoying it. Fantasia's performed at gay prides and club events here in DC several times, and I'm sure she'll be back again. She doesn't seem very anti-gay at all.

As far as Target goes, there's one right across from one of the gyms I go to. So if I need something, I'm not going an extra 20 minutes out of my way to go to Kmart. I'd just be inconveniencing myself more than anything else.

I definitely try to avoid spending my money at businesses that consider me a second-class citizen. I love Chick-Fil-A, but won't be spending any of my money there. That's the same as me supporting anti-gay legislation, which Chick-Fil-A supports. Didn't Target issue an apology or something?

Dunno... all those boycotts seem to be against stuff that I would never buy in the first place. So it makes no difference.
    Funny how that works out...

Just as I have a right to shop anywhere I WANT, these companies and people have a right to their freedom of speech. I am not gonna stop buying something just cuz someone SAYS something anti whatever. It's when they DO anti-gay, etc, things that would make me stop.

Then again, I think a lot of people would stop buying almost everything from food-toys-electronics-clothes if we REALLY knew what went into making/producing them. I think some of this stops some people (people who soley buy USA made things or vegans and vegetarians) BUT it certainly doesn't stop everyone else from buying whatever they want,

You could probably find reasons to boycott every damn store to be honest icon_rolleyes.gif
So it seems kinda silly to me at the end of the day

You can like the art and not like the artist. Just because you like something made by someone that you think is a bad influence, doesn't mean you have to cut yourself off from their work.

Do you think that "anti-gay" people are going to stop watching shows they like (for example How I Met Your Mother) just because there's a gay actor on it?

I certainly DO think people do that..a lot. I've even heard people mention they wouldn't watch the Oscars the year that Ellen hosted it. It's mostly the Christian right-wing nuts that do it...but I think it's pretty common.

I believe he just plays a gay guy, but I don't think he is actually gay. And I've a feeling that anti gay people don't watch those sort off shows.

That voice! Who in god's name can stand that voice? I'd rather hear a recording of Daffy Duck singing or an Alvin and the Chipmunks album.

I boycott because her voice is god awful.

Supporting people who do harm to the gay community is like voting for Hitler because while he does have a bad habit of roasting Jews at least he keeps the trains running on time.

I don't have a bloody idea of who is Fantasia Barrino !
Anyway i think it is quite rubbish for someone in the public eyes to tweet or reveal their opinions about politics ..
It for sure would weight in my decision to support artists , politicians , companies , businesses or even acquaintances ...

And you're about two replies less original - we get it you're living in the past !

pretty much to sum it up --- she goes and says " gay is a sin - sin is a disease "

    Ouch ? Lol

I may be naiive, but I don't think she was bashing gays intentionally. It sounds like she herself felt attacked by some conservative using christian values against her, and so responded that there's TONS of stuff out there that the bible doesn't condone, yet they're coming after her?? (meaning to say she's the least of their worries when they have bigger fish to fry.)

You can say that again! icon_lol.gif

Its okay, Your 2:30 PM reply was just ONE less original than your one from the minute before!

"for those of you who are unaware," Ms. Barrino opened mouth, inserted foot, doubled-down, saw the light, and apologized, all four months ago, as everyone who got to the back page of the link saw.

The OP is just figuring out Ms. Barrino's first misstep from January and wonders what to do post-hence. The response to AMoonHawk reiterated the link I trust the OP will eventually review.

Everybody caught up now? If not, click that link thingie and do so first. Cheerro!
