    NEW YORK (AP)
NBA veteran center Jason Collins has become the first male professional athlete in the major four American sports leagues to come out as gay.

Collins wrote a first-person account posted Monday on Sports Illustrated's website.

In the article, Collins writes: "I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, 'I'm different.' If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."

"Why am I coming out now?" Collins continued in the piece. "Well, I started thinking about this in 2011 during the NBA player lockout. I'm a creature of routine. When the regular season ends I immediately dedicate myself to getting game ready for the opener of the next campaign in the fall. But the lockout wreaked havoc on my habits and forced me to confront who I really am and what I really want. With the season delayed, I trained and worked out. But I lacked the distraction that basketball had always provided."

The 34-year-old Collins has played for six NBA teams in 12 seasons and appeared in two NBA Finals.

He finished this past season with the Washington Wizards and is now a free agent. After averaging 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds over his career, he says he wants to continue playing.

Hundreds of celebrities and US sports athletes took to twitter to congratulate Jason Collins on coming out. Rosie O'Donnell, Ricky Martin, Bill Clinton, Earvin Magic Johnson, Spike Lee were among those who tweeted messages in support of Collins.

    Bill Clinton wrote:

“I have known Jason Collins since he was Chelsea’s classmate and friend at Stanford. Jason’s announcement today is an important moment for professional sports and in the history of the LGBT community. It is also the straightforward statement of a good man who wants no more than what so many of us seek: to be able to be who we are; to do our work; to build families and to contribute to our communities. For so many members of the LGBT community, these simple goals remain elusive. I hope that everyone, particularly Jason’s colleagues in the NBA, the media and his many fans extend to him their support and the respect he has earned.”

Just hours after NBA center Jason Collins became the first male athlete in a major professional sport to come out as gay, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace provided the world with the first homophobic comment from a major sports player.

    26-year-old Wallace tweeted:
All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH (shakin’ my head) …

It would be better if a major team like the Lakers or the Magics picked him up.

I'm so happy for him, I just hate that as soon as you google him or ask anyone about him, the first thing that will come up is "he's gay." Hopefully after more and more athletes come out, it will no longer be this big issue in the sports world.

And the ownership of the Dolphins reined Wallace in immediately.
