John McCain got an endorsement today that is right out of the Onion. John McCain has said he will be tough on terror. He wont come home from Iraq in defeat. John McCain is going to crack down on rogue states like Iran and their all powerful president. So it is no surprise that McCain should receive the endorsment of... al-Qaeda?

Telegraph"This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said.

"Then, al-Qaeda will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush."

"If al-Qaeda carries out a big operation against American interests," it said, "this act will be support of McCain because it will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda then will succeed in exhausting America till its last year in it."

A chilling retelling of the Emperor's New Cloths.

Well their logic in a very twisted way makes sense. Al-Qaeda knows it is unlikely to destroy the West through terrorist attacks directly. It also knows it does not have to. The beginning of the end of Western influence on the world can be accomplished through terrorist attacks that provoke responses from the US. These responses will alienate more Moslems against the West, and cause the US to spend hundreds of billions of dollars fighting the "war on terror".

On 9/11 I knew I was witnessing one of the pivotal moments of human history. Not because of the horrific events themselves, but of what the response the US was likely to be considering who the President was. After all World War I, the biggest change agent of the 20th century, was started with the assassination of a not very popular Austrian Archduke.
