HSV-1...

Well, this isn't exactly something I wanted to discuss on a public forum, but I"m unfortunately running my head into a wall and making myself severely depressed as a result, so I turn to vent.

After battling a severe sore throat and fever for 48 hours I went to urgent care to get looked at (since I don't have health insurance for another two months thanks to my awesome employer---so that's 6 full months of working for them before I get it!) and I show up negative for strep. My gums are on inflamed, I've got a sore on the tip of my tongue and a couple red sore spots on the side and a few 'vesicles' if you will on the roof of my mouth. Meanwhile, I'm extremely fatigued and don't seem to be getting anywhere with the clinic people.

Instead, I go to my dentist.

First he thinks I have something called 'trench mouth'. Oh how I wish it was that. Then again, that would shock me given how anal I am about tooth care. Instead, he diagnoses me with having herpes labialis, or orolabial herpes. Cue a morbid look on my face followed by an almost instantaneous gut reaction to start balling my eyes out. I start panicking in my head as to how this could have possibly happened... I don't hook up, people I've dated have been clean, I know I was stressing big time at work which causes an outbreak, but where'd this come from?

I now have what I joked about when I was younger... friends and I would point and laugh at people who had cold/canker sore and say "you've got herpes!". Now that I'm on the opposite end of that finger pointing I don't know how to feel. I look at myself in the mirror and want to start bawling because I feel like I've committed some horrible atrocity against myself, despite the fact that I could have been carrying this my entire life without even knowing it.

I know that 60% of the adult population has it, but I just can't wrap my head around it, and it doesn't help that a vast majority of people (should I say idiots?) think I've got genital herpes as well, which, thank God, I do not. Am I wrong in my line of thinking? I just feel like I've marred myself for life, placed a check against myself. I feel like I'm some sort of disgusting cretin now. I hate myself for being diseased for the rest of my life.

Am I just over-complicating a (somewhat) trivial thing?

Same thing happened to me with the sore throat, and the feelings of depression.
Whatever, it happens, most people have it, I'm assuming in the gay community even more.
If it helps, when I first found out I read up a lot about it and found out having hsv-1 can pretty much prevent getting it on your genitals, so that helps! Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure once you have the virus in one part of you body (mouth) you most likely will not get it elsewhere.

    Cheer up boy!

Herpes is forever. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Seriously though, it's mouth herpes. A ton of people have it. Now, if you had HSV-2, then you'd have a reason to freak out.

Yes, stress probably caused the flare-up. I'd saying the anxiety you're carrying around is a greater health concern than HSV-1, which, it can't be repeated enough, most people have -- including the "clean" guys you've been with. Ditto deluding yourself about what consitutes "clean."

Just hum this little ditty when you're feeling dirty:

You are certainly overcomplicating a trivial thing.

Maybe it's because you're not "perfect" anymore. I don't mean to sound like a jerk. Some people live a little while until they get a little sullied by the world. Your first sullying, maybe? As far as it goes, it's not much of one. No doubt there's all sorts of good banging ups waiting for you.

...and what reason would that be?

    That's nothing: I'm dating a guy with HSV-19.

It's very treatable, I think you'll be fine.

Oral herpes is a very common condition, 60 percent of Americans are said to have it. I always call people out when they make fun of someone with an outbreak, chances are they themselves also have herpes, it's just dormant.

There is nothing you can do now, since herpes is a lifelong viral infection. Move on. You play safe, which is all you can do on your part. Your mind just needs to process the situation. In the future, your immune system will fight the outbreaks and your sore throats, if any, will be much less symptomatic.

Btw, you haven't marred yourself. Anyone with a brain who is worth dating will understand the condition, get over it, and not like/love you any less.

    Best of luck ;)

Be grateful this is simply cold sores and not SHINGLES or CHICKEN POX or GENITAL HERPES, or any of the other fun diseases in the herpes family.....
I had Valtrex prescribed when I had Shingles.....really good medication. Shingles was unbelievably PAINFUL!

I learned something here. I had no idea shingles ran in the herpes family.

Everyone had chicken pox as a kid, so everyone will have a bout with shingles one time in their life. Happened to me, but I was prescribed Cippro. Guess what? I found out there is one drug I am allergic to...Cippro! Made everything worse and since there was (as I was told then) no other medication to take, I ended up with a topical lotion for the blisters on my legs. That eliminated it in about 36 hours.

Cold sores are cold sores. Very treatable as others have noted.

I think having chicken pox as a kid gives one anti-bodies and built up immunities to HSV when an adult, we didn't learn this in the 70's-80's but only recently did chicken pox be known in the herpes family and shingles rash in an usually older person or an immune comprised person. My mom who died from a form of leukemia, had shingles that were painful before she died

Those of us who didn't have chicken pox as a kid, never built a immunity are more likely to get a HSV infection, those of us gay men who were not always gay or came out late and had sex with women are also more likely to get a HSV infection, women are more likely to carry a HSV-2 infection due to the vagina warm environment

Oral HSV-1, cold sores are so common, 80%, most people don't have outbreaks after the first, if you don't have symptoms, the only way to know is through a blood test, but even most doctors and the CDC recommends not testing for HSV anymore its so common, OTC Abreva medication, http://www.abreva.com/cream/cold-sore-myths, im so tired of this subject being so traumatic for no reason at all, its not!
