The effects of being a nightshifts worker on your body.

    I'm a nightshift worker and I was wondering if any of guys, are having the same lifestyle as I. I work for 7 nights in a row and after that, I got 7 days off.

    So, it means that I live at nighttime for one week, and the other one I live at daytime.

    Do you have to cope with side effects from sleeping deprivation?

    Does it have an impact on your workout? on your weight?

    As far as I'm concerned, I got problems to lose weight. My trainer adjusted my program and it seems to be working. I'm slowly losing the extra weight but it is slow.

    Any anwers on this topic will be appreciated.

    My work hours are even crazier. Night shift one day, day shift the next. Essentially, some days I have a 12 hour break before my new shift starts again. It absolutely wrecks havoc on my sleeping routine and my workout routine.

    So I just try to go whenever I can to try and keep up. I find that if I eat right, it helps greatly too... and definitely helps with maintaining my weight.

    When I worked third shift, I kept the same sleep schedule all the time unless something came up that forced me to change (like family visits). I have heard that third shift gets harder on us as we get older. Personally I prefer second shift but currently work first.

    As far as your schedule, duglyduckling, your employer better have a compelling reason to make you work like that, because it seriously affects your job performance.

    I've been an occasional insomniac forever...and it has a real disastrous effect on the workouts
    ....you're more prone to injury
    gains suck
    and the enthusiasm takes a nose dive :p

    my night job has made a pretty big impact on my life. I work nights, plus some days, plus school. On my worst days I will be up from 7am-4am.

    Always changing and irregular hours are difficult to manage but not impossible. Time management is key and priorities/goals need to be set. To excel you really need to be committed. Find little areas where efficiency can be increased. for example, I have managed to do away with a 2 hour nap in between 2, 8 hour shifts, and instead I go to the gym.

    Don't get me wrong...I love my sleep! but my goals dictate how much sleep I get. For me, any time working out is better than no time. And often I leave the gym much more energized than if I had taken my nap!

    Like with every schedule and routine, especially those are heavily constricted, it may seem a little daunting and grueling but you will get used to it! ;)

    philibuster: yeah... it's part of the deal. I work as a driver, so those are actually normal hours for us. Up to 14 hour work shifts, and 12 hours of rest in between. It's a constantly rotating schedule, which means the start time for each day varies. But it's not always like this... during the slow winter months, it's work one day, off one and half day... haha, so it's good during the slow season. :)

    This a problem that I have too, I work a three shift rotation, two weeks of each. I find it is hard to get a routine that I can stick to. My sleep and eating paterns are always changing and add to the problem is that I have to drive 45 mins each way and by the time I get home I don't feel like exercising.

    after 22 years of shift work I am literally sick of it. I reduced my hours from 80 to 64. would I go to a 9-5 job? nope.

    Fewer hours helps make a difference in recovery, time for working out. Financially I just accept it.

    I find working nights in the winter easier than in summer.

    I also switch shifts with those who prefer or have to work nights.

    I tend to eat less on nights for some reason.

    I have used melatonin on occasion to help with sleep.
