I have several friends who have been named Thiel Fellows (and others who were offered the fellowship and declined it) since the program started. Many of them have loved their experiences with the fellowship and others have not and who have terminated the fellowship halfway. Peter Thiel's stance on formal education is clearly controversial (and ironic in some ways, too), but I think his general motivation for the fellowship is justifiable in exceptional circumstances. Still, though, I think there's value in math majors studying Shakespeare and in literature majors studying calculus and in the liberal arts more generally, but Thiel is clearly far too utilitarian in his attitude towards education to agree.
