I am going to South Beach for my 21st birthday in June and was wondering what are some good affordable places to stay preferably under $100/night. I don't need anything fancy since I will be spending most of my time outside the hotel, but I don't want anything run down. Yes, I know google exist and I have been looking just seeing if you guys have any recommendations.

I bet you'll have a blast. I stayed at the Richmond hotel. Pick the studios, I love them. I don't remember the price though, but it was around $100/night.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to it and I'll check that hotel out.

Might still be there, you can google, but there used to be a hostel on I think it was Espanola, west off Washington, just south of Lincoln. No idea as to its quality or costs, however.

The Clay Hotel? I've been looking at that one. Affordable with good reviews and only two blocks away from the beach.

I wouldn't have known the name, never been myself, just have had lunch on that street. It's a great little lane, really quaint. Googling now, yes, that's it. If the place is adequate you'll love the location with easy access to Lincoln and beach as you've noticed. Washington tends to attract an eclectic mix of people so after hours be a little careful (not paranoid, just aware of your surroundings).

You are welcome to stay here. My couch is more than two blocks from the beach, but Miami is just a train ride away. icon_smile.gif

I recommend staying away from bars until you are of legal drinking age. Or were you looking for a different kind of recommendation? icon_wink.gif

Try the Penguin, on Ocean drive 99.00 a night.
It's not the W but a great crash pad in a perfect location across from beach.

I was thinking about Lords, but ratings were mixed when I went online. Low marks for bad beds, indifferent service and terrible breakfast, though overall not too bad in some reviews.

Lords is better for their nighttime gay bar scene, of which paulflexes can attest. And they do have a lovely contemporary look, though I've never stayed there, being only 35 miles from us.

Bottom line I wouldn't dismiss it totally, and not for $103 (though I found their site hard to navigate to determine their rates, a phone call might be more productive).

I stayed there a few times but not lately. I think the Penguin was on a reality show not too long ago. Even if you don't stay there they had a great breakfast at the Front Porch.

Last time around we stayed at a place called Ocean Five which was pleasant although didn't really have a south beach feel to it.

Yes it was on a reality show. I stayed there this past feb.

We really liked the 11th St. Diner for breakfast, too. Wondering if it's still good.

Indeed, it was on a show about this guy who goes around the country trying to fix the worst hotels in America.

who the fuck wants to stay at a hostel on their 21st birthday? This guy is going to want to be a slut and get fucked every which way from Sunday...

Anyhow, I've both lived there and visited there and stayed with hotels a hundred times. #1, if you want to pay less than $100 and have something decent with more options...go to mid-beach or north beach up til about 79th street. You don't want to be too far north though. Also, stay off of Ocean Drive! If you're driving...you don't want to have to deal with that. Make sure you factor that in cause staying at a hotel with a car in South Beach is going to cost $15-30 a night! Some even charge a $12-15 resort fee also.

I just looked at hotels in Miami, they are WAY more expensive even for this time of year than it was 3-6 years ago. They have remodeled alot of stuff and Miami Beach is no longer shabby dilapidated hotels like it was. If I were you, I would just cut thru the chase, go on Priceline.com or HotWire.com or Booking.com and pick out stuff from there unless you looking for something specific. It's like a travel agency to me. You know if the place has breakfast, free parking, near the beach, etc. and review ratings.

I've been to Lords twice and the service is the only downside. The most annoying aspect was it took forever to get a car back from the valet.

Otherwise it is clean & cheery. I like the fact the hotel is only 2 blocks from the gay beach at 12th and Palace bar. The hotel "gym" is free access to Equinox down the road. Free wifi too.

Personally I never eat or drink at a hotel as it almost always under delivers at an overcharged price.

I don't even know what the gay scene is like in Miami or Miami beach, but i'm curious to find out. Thanks for your suggestions, those websites do allow me to narrow things down a bit.
