When some random person comes up to you at a bar and says, "smile"

Someone did that to me yesterday and that shit irritates me. I hate when people say that. I get it every once in awhile. It's like first of all, I'm by myself having a drink. It would look retarded for me to be looking around smiling. I don't know if they say that because they think I feel sad for being alone or what. I don't. I just have my normal look on my face. What, I'm supposed to be looking around with a giant grin like this:

    goosebumps-goosebumps-3273059-300-285.jp

He then says, "my friend said you look like him when he's frowning" I told him, you may think I look that way, but I don't FEEL that way. I wasn't even frowning, don't even know what he's talking about. I was looking around the bar with my drink minding my business. I laughed it off or what not, but I'm like dude, get away with that bullcrap.

Anyone else get that? I think it's just so dumb. That's not a conversation starter. Its a punch you in your face starter..

I've gotten it in the past. Usually some drunk girl at a pride festival or new year's eve party. So of course if they are bombed off their ass, they get frisky and personal and annoying

It really depends on how the tone of the context was said. If you say it with a genuine smile, and initiative that has a tone of honesty to it, it can make a guy let their guard down a little, I've said it to a guy once. and we started chatting up, left the club and ate pizza on a corner on the sidewalk across from the club we met at. We became really good friends from there.

Awww, how cute. With me, they usully just drop out of nowhere while I'm sitting down, and then disappear just as quickly. I don't care how anyone says it though.

I get this a lot, I'm an intense person. I will normal smile a flattering smile followed along with a FU. I figure that's a happy notion, after all it's said with a smile.

Yeah, I don't like that either, especially from a total stranger. It's like, why are you in my face telling me what I should do?

From a different angle, I had one person say this to me, "You don't smile much but I like that, when you do I know it is for real." THAT I liked icon_smile.gif

Nice use of the R word...

While yes it is annoying that someone is trying to tell you what emotion you should be displaying, there is nothing wrong with someone who is by themselves smiling. It means they are having happy thoughts. I smile when I am by myself all the time.

No, I disagree. It's obnoxious in any context...

Yes, it's happened to me and it is indeed obnoxious, especially since normally the guy just does it as he's walking by you. I'd be more forgiving if it were just a tone-deaf way of trying to start a conversation.

This would happen to me too, back in the day when I'd go out to the bars by myself.
It was irritating, in a way.
I do think some guys were just looking for a way to start a conversation, and I was cool with it when it resulted in talking to a guy. It's a lame way to go about it though. If I want to smile, I'll fuckin' smile. Come up with an opening line that will MAKE me smile.
I did hate it though, if they'd walk up and say "smile" and then just walk away.
    That's stupid.
Say something meaningful or at least complimentary if you're just going to say something and walk away - otherwise, keep your pie hole shut and force your own fuckin' smile.

Perhaps because of my Russian-German doner DNA, I only smile when amused, pleased or gratified.

IMO, most people look like idiot-savants, smiling and grinning all the time, with no reason to do so.

I don't think the person meant it as an insult.. If you look too angry.. It could be a good thing to get noted on that.

If the guy was using "smile" as an opener, at least you can say it is better than the one I heard when I haunted the gay bars back in the day - - - which went like this:

    "Hey man, what's your sign?"

    Oh God - - - - - corn-pone - - - I know! But I heard it a few times......back in the Age of Aquarius (the 80's).

Wow! Aren't you the pleasant one. Isn't it any wonder you're sitting alone?

Why not change your attitude and say something flirty back like: Why don't you give me something to smile about?

Or if that's not your style how about: Oh, I didn't know I was frowning, I was just deep in thought and didn't realize I was looking so dour. Thanks

Or if you are like me you can respond with: Oh, I just had to put my dog of 10 years to sleep today. I'm really not feeling all that jolly. I hope you understand. Then after they stumble all over themselves apologizing: Ha! Gotcha! Just kidding.

Life doesn't always have to be greated with irritation. You have no control over what people say but you do have control over how you react. Why react negatively and exacerbate your foul mood. Try having a little fun with them. You might make a friend or two and that's hardly ever a bad thing.

You're in a setting where people drink together or alone, someone says "smile" - yes lame but it's a drinking establishment which can attract all kinds including a few who are likely already outside of their comfort zone as soon as they walk in the door - and then that someone gets even clumsier and adds that it looks like you're frowning.

This shit irritates you? You hate it? You say you laughed it off but it still made you want to punch them in the face. Really?

No I don't get that. All I get is that you got very worked up over a whole lot of nothing, and I'm guessing that if a guy you thought was hot approached you and told you to smile, we'd be reading a different post. Then again, if you thought he was hot, you might have already been smiling.

Generally that line is delivered by someone who has never had the nerve to talk to someone of Your calibre and is trying to be cheeky and coy and has just done 3 shots of Maker's Mark in order to even approach You.

Best response: Give Me a Reason To.

They either will...or will run to the bathroom cuz they can't hold their Maker's Mark.
