The most photographed icon from Hurricane Sandy's assault on the Jersey Shore - the Jetstar roller coaster - left standing in the surf after it was swept off a earby pier is due to start to be dismantled today - albeit AFTER Prince Harry pays a visit to Seaside Heights to bear witness to the sight. There was talk of leaving it there but public safety issues (a person was already arrested for trespassing after he swam out there, climbed the structure and planted an American flag at the top) were paramount; however a section of the Jetstar will be preserved by the Pier and housed in a possible Sandy showcase in the future.

Thanks for the heads up. I go to Seaside Park a lot and I never stopped up to see it. Maybe I'll think about going down today or tomorrow. I hear it is impressive. Where was it, at the seaside heights peir or farther up, cause I might not bother if its too far north. I was surprised when they started to actually consider leaving it up. It is a neat attraction, but there's no way people would keep out of the wreckage.

well, there's always coney island until the next storm comes through. seaside heights wasn't really all that in terms of the amusement park rides. then again, there's always six flags and wildwood.

speaking of amusement parks, remember action park? icon_surprised.gif

I didn't either, until my husband (a ginger fetishist) showed me the light. Ginger's hot, and it makes me appreciate my gingerness even more!

A ginger fetishist? It makes me wonder if your "husband" loves you or your red hair.

It was the hair that pulled him in; My charm that kept him.

8yrs on, we must be doing something right.

I went too. Its not something I would have thought I'd really want to see, but I figured if it was a reason to go to the shore, I'd be crazy not to take it. There wasn't a whole lot too see unless you went into one of the restaurants with a decent vantage point. It looked like there was really only one, but overall I'm glad I went. I'll try and upload a photo. Thanks again for the heads up.

One thing I never quite understood was, did the coaster get blown off the pier, or did the pier disintegrate underneath it? I think I remember it in the same place, but I can't quite visualize it. I have heard conflicting stories, but it seems most logical to me that it fell into and settled in the water below after the pier washed away, so it never actually moved. (just vertically)

RIP Jet Star...many a times Ive been on that thing growing, not always sober

There will not be any adult rides at Seaside this year but they should have the kiddie part up and running. Interesting to see what turnout it gets for Memorial Day weekend. Temps only in the low 70s forecasted with sun but of course you can take off 5-10 degrees for the immediate shore. Nevertheless I do not think cool temps will keep people away.

I will hit Asbury hopefully this weekend and do Seaside in July...Midway cheese sausage!
