I've never done a roadtrip before. When I told my parents I was going to a conference in St. Louis, they wanted to buy me a plane ticket...but I didn't get one originally because I'm doing this last minute and I don't want to spend .5K on that, and it would take 7 hours to fly with layovers anyway. Why not just drive 13 hours? I drive a Prius so it will be 4 tanks of gas round trip, and 1 tank of gas is about 8-9 gallons.

So, I am planning on getting some books on tape for entertainment. The conference is in St. Louis from the 20-23, so I'm thinking of leaving the 19th and driving to Little Rock and finishing the rest on the 20th (doesn't start till 6pm). I decided Little Rock would be better than driving through Oklahoma.

Unfortunately, no one from my program wanted to come with me, so I'm going solo. I also haven't heard anyone at the conference wanting to split a room cost with me, so I guess I have the room to myself icon_sad.gif

I'm a bit scared since I've never driven that long before. I'm planning to take breaks every 1.5 hours to walk around for maybe 10 min. I have a fear of being mugged/killed at one of those rest stops.

You'll be fine. Seriously. Just exercise normal caution. Highway rest stops are pretty well patrolled, and anyway you're more likely to get accosted by some closet case wanting restroom action than by a mugger. (BTW, don't do it, if you're caught - or entrapped - there can be serious consequences. Totally not worth it.)

Isn't entrapment by a police officer illegal? That's not fair honestly.

They do it alllllll the time -- the legal limits on entrapment still leave the police a lot of leeway. And anyway, if it's your word against theirs, judges will believe theirs.

Believe me. I know plenty of guys who have gotten snared and the ramifications are bad.

So basically, if I think a guy at a rest stop is sexy, ask him to buy me lunch/dinner and a movie before we shag, right? Or at least a motel room?

Yup. Don't even think about doing anything in public.

Making out in public is fine though right? I mean straight people do that shit all the time. It's only not ok if you have an exposed erection outside of a locker room that's being stimulated.

Like, I've heard if you get an erection in a public shower it's ok, it's just not ok to masturbate or get BJs.

You're slicing the bologna way too thin. The "straight people do it" argument is not a legal argument. An example. Straight people have sex all the time in tents while camping in national parks. But in national parks, if you're a crusing gay man, they will get you for "public" sex even if there's no one else around.

The other point is, you don't want to be arguing about this at trial, which is where you'd be doing it. The police are going to do what they're going to do.

    Just don't.

I wouldn't do it in an area known for cruising.

Remember that if the hot guy turns out to be an undercover officer, they're going to get you the minute you touch him in any way. Wrong? Yes. But that's the way it is.

Does this mean I need to avoid some areas because I don't want anything coming toward me on a 2 way road super fast.

I drove up to St. Louis in March for a conference. It's a 7 hour drive from where I live and found the trip to be very enjoyable. It took me 4 tanks of gas, round trip, and I didn't have a problem at all. I planned out ahead of time where I was going to get lunch and fill up.

Traveling I-44 up through Missouri has some great vistas, especially around St. Louis. Since you are traveling through Arkansas, your views will be incredible while passing through the Ozarks.

As for the rest stops and gas stations, I suggest staying aware of your surroundings and make a good judgement call. If you find a place you are uneasy about, just go to the next one.

Splitting your trip into two days will make it much more manageable, even though slightly more expensive with additional hotel/motel nights.

Good luck, have fun, and drive safe!

If you're weary of rest stops then don't use them. Just stop in towns along the way. I've done many road trips. Several were 12 hours of driving. I'll usually stop every 3 hours or when I need gas. There's really very little to be afraid of. Just don't speed too much.

The happyiest I've ever been in my life was when I did a road trip from New Orleans to Los Angeles by myself. It changed my life in such a huge way I got my first and only tattoo so I would always remember it. I planned on being gone for a week, but ended up taking 22 days. My boyfriend was worried I wasn't coming back home.

My only suggestion is to avoid Dallas. It was my least favorite city I've ever been to, and that's putting it lightly.

bro, you're 27 years old....and ur a little scared of driving that long?
    lol

You're a big boy now, I'm sure you'll be just fine. I've driven from Miami to NYC a million times, which is about a 20 hour drive, allowing time for stops for food, gas, rest, etc when I was 19, 20, 21.

And the whole rest-stop thing? Like, seriously, that's ridiculous, don't bother hitting on guys at rest-stops, or making out with them. So dumb.

unless you suck on the road or are prone to fall asleep behind the wheel, do it.
