    Heh.

    http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1777100

In a series of studies in which consumers assembled IKEA boxes, folded origami, and built sets of Legos, we demonstrate and investigate the boundary conditions for what we term the “IKEA effect” – the increase in valuation of self-made products. Participants saw their amateurish creations – of both utilitarian and hedonic products – as similar in value to the creations of experts, and expected others to share their opinions. Our account suggests that labor leads to increased valuation only when labor results in successful completion of tasks; thus when participants built and then destroyed their creations, or failed to complete them, the IKEA effect dissipated. Finally, we show that labor increases valuation of completed products not just for consumers who profess an interest in “do-it-yourself” projects, but even for those who are relatively uninterested. We discuss the implications of the IKEA effect for marketing managers and organizations more generally.

Yet another attack by riddler on Western values and our business structure.

I wonder who sponsors him? Anyone care to guess who wants the West to fail, our businesses to collapse, our government to be replaced, our culture to fade away?

Just noticed another of your asinine posts. First, Ikea is ingenious. I happen to quite like their company, the look of their products though not really the quality. Why would I need sponsorship?

Care to comment on the article itself or is anything other than ad hominem attacks above you? I'd ridicule more - and there is so much of you to ridicule but it seems so terribly uncharitable. icon_wink.gif

Oh, I am curious though - are Nvidia's new gaming consoles also part of this elaborate plan of mine to hope that Western businesses collapse and fail?

What about my posts on the massive growth in new energy supplies in the US that are disrupting (in a really good way) geopolitics?

venue35 saidI never really thought of ikea as western culture since its from Sweden but yeah I guess the concept of ikea appeals to the everyday American. But like I said you buy their cheap furniture it ain't gonna last...but they have higher priced furniture thats really nice.

I agree - I wouldn't normally think "western culture" when I think "ikea" - but that's artdeco aka Hyacinth for you. And I do have a number of their shelves... not the billy ones but the somewhat nicer ones - which I like.

The study which is interesting is that if marketers want to create products that people value - they should have them put some effort into them... to create buy in. It's again ingenious...

I bought a few things from Ikea. I still have a dining set from 3 years ago. I sold a table on craigslist that went FAST.

However, I put the chair cover for my chairs in the washer, on delicate setting and they are ripped beyond repeair along the stitching. Time for a new couch.

Things last when you treat them right. Most people abuse their furniture etc. It is always interesting when looking at pictures to see what is in the background. A lot of time people live in mess.

It may still regard itself as a Swedish company, but it has a baffling business structure. The Ikea trademark and concept are owned by Inter Ikea Systems, a Netherlands company, whose parent is Inter Ikea Holding, registered in Luxembourg, which is owned by Interogo Foundation of Liechtenstein. I could be wrong, but it looks like one huge tax dodge.

Makes sense that people would overvalue their own creations, or think they are equal to professional craftsman. I know a lot of writers who call their books their babies, and I get how they feel, but in lieu of years of experience and multiple attempts at storytelling, many of them are really blind to faults that might seem glaring to readers.

Certainly anyone who puts a little time into assembling something would put some value into it. Doh.

As for IKEA, I don't see any real sense in downing them. Some of the things I just would not want, but some of it is just fine and very reasonable in price. I have several lamps that work very well and have great style. Two of them go nicely in my Stickley living room. I also bought a wardrobe there. It was a job to assemble but it fits perfectly in the space I had for it and after 15 years is showing no wear at all. I have some kitchen items that are great buys and perform as well as an professional equivalents I have ever used. Like any store, you need to shop carefully, but having made my choices nothing from IKEA has ever given me any problems.

Is there anything I post you won't attack? Just a pompous pretender. I'll quote a little from your RJ profile:

    "expensively educated"
    "indulged in every way"
"I am just waiting for a very wealthy teenager to come along and take care of me"
Guys I'm Looking to Meet: "VERY wealthy elderly men with one foot in the grave"
"A beautiful face and a hot body are nice but not nearly as important as expensive clothes."
"Please be alcoholic. I need someone who really knows ALL the brands of cigarettes so that they can confidently reccomend [sic] the ones that are best"
"If you begin any sentence with the words "me thinks" I will find you, bury you up to your neck next to a red army ant hill and cover your head with honey. Seriously, I will."

My, my, my! What a class act you are!

Yer a good case in point.

The fact that every one of the lines you quoted flew over your head says everything about you that needs to be said.

And I rarely interact with you at all.

I wish their stuff was more durable...it's so cheap and looks so trendy. But what do you expect from a kitchen table that fits in a shoe box, equipped with nothing but an Allen Wrench..

you mean like when stupid people read articles, post snippets of them, and then think they have any understanding of the discipline to which they refer to when in fact they just assembled a bunch of crap? yes, i totally concur with this ikea effect.

Is Ikea really that bad? My parents bought a table from Ikea in Germany almost 30 years ago and it's still in-shape. It definitely looks used after my parents raised 3 children with it but it's still durable!

My experience with their stuff has been the same. It is functional, sturdy and durable. I bought some IKEA stuff when I was in military accommodation, disassembled it, shipped it overseas and put it back together. It was still going strong when I left it behind in Cyprus.

I'm no fan of IKEA's tax-dodging company structure, but you have to give them credit for their good design and good value.

Maybe they should have called it the "Junior High Shop Project" effect. Then maybe some people would have read the article and realized that it doesn't have anything to do with IKEA.
