The number of U.S. workers applying for unemployment benefits for the first time rose sharply in the week ended May 11 after hitting a five-year low the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday.
First-time claims jumped 32,000 to 360,000, highest since March. The four-week moving average of initial claims, which smooths volatility, rose 1,250 to 339,250.
