What is the scariest video game you ever played, doesn't necessarily have to be a survival horror game. Dead Space and Dead Island and Dead Rising have sexy heroes (Isaac Clarke, Logan, and Chuck Green) Left 4 Dead not so much but the game play was the best.

Any answer other than Amnesia: the Dark Descent is simply wrong. The atmosphere, environments, and story are absolutely perfect. The best part is the music and sound effects. It all comes together to produce an experience that can easily invoke extreme anxiety as well as a vague sense of oppressive fear even when you're not around enemies.

If you have not played it, then get it from Steam - it's cheap. Do not watch let's-plays of it. Buy the game, turn all the lights in the room off, and start playing. If you can't be bothered to immerse yourself in it then do not bother at all.

Resident Evil 4 was not scary. You had constant distant line-of-sight, Leon can easily run faster than and outmaneuver any enemy in the game, and to top it off you're consistently armed to the teeth past the game's ten minute mark. Not scary if you can just barrel into a room and fill everything in it full of hot lead. RE1 the remade version is the only game in the series that is anything even near scary.

So far, Silent Hill 2. There was something really unsettling about that game. The sound effects and the weird mangled creatures hobbling around in the hallways... just weirded me out a bit.

I actually own this game but have yet to play it. It came in one of the Humble Bundles I bought last year. I'll have to try it out.

Yea, Silent Hill 2 is right up there for me, too. Amazing visuals, atmosphere, and story.

My first choice would be the Fatal Frame series. I prefer the creepy atmospheres and disturbing back-stories over "BOO!" scares and excessive gore. Plus, having only a camera to "fight" ghosts by forcing you into first-person with a tiny field of vision is intense. Those games gave me legit nightmares...
