What do you fellas think of a shootout giving a team that extra point? I'd prefer to see them play sudden death until somebody bloody scores!

I like shootouts. You get to see some of the best players on either teams in a 1v1 against the opposing teams goalie, it's really exciting. Also, the players are pretty tired after playing a full game and if the game were to drag on to a second or even 3rd OT period, both teams would look pretty tired after a while. I'd rather see some quality goals/saves in a few minutes than seeing a game drag on when both teams are dead tired.

With the regular season being 82 games sudden death overtime would not be possible. After all teams have planes to catch to get to the next city. I initially liked the shootout, but now there are so many it is starting to lose its' excitement. The fact that my favourite team the Maple Leafs never seem to win in the shootout does not help either!

I don't know, I guess I have a problem having the playoff games played differently than the regular season games. The shootout means the games (the extra point, that is) falls on the individuals as opposed to the team. Perhaps they should consider a longer overtime and award no point to the loser. That may put a burr under their saddles. Or something like that.

I personally think the 5 minute overtime is almost a total waste of time, it rarely decides anything, so perhaps going to 10 minutes would be a good thing. Hockey has far too many ties now, because the games are so defensive. Some of the steps they took recently to open up the game helped, but there still too many boring 1-0 and 2-1 games.

i think surreal's idea is the best. a five-minute OT doesn't encourage a team to score, merely not to lose, so they play it too safe. OT after OT in the regular season doesn't make sense because of the length of the season, which i think is too long anyway (really, do many people care at all about hockey in may and june or whenever it ends?). But overtime play in the stanley cup games are awesome.

i think a shootout is like deciding the winner of a baseball game by way of a home run hitting contest. but considering how long the season is and that you just can't have regular season games drag on and on, its the best solution so far. since the blackhawks have lost a few consecutive shootouts this season, i was really opposed to shootouts, but then they won one this weekend, so now i don't hate them so much. icon_wink.gif

The shootout is a tough one. Personally I'm not a fan of it either as a fan, player, or coach. Boiled down to its essence, it is a team sport and the shootout removes that core. Why not just have them wrestle or play horseshoes? You win games through grit, endurance, sacrifice, etc. That is what makes the game great. The shootout only includes the game's superficial flashy elements and leaves it a mere hollow shell.

Neither am I a fan of awarding pints to losers. If you can't win in regulation you ought not get full points. And if you don't win, you shouldn't get any. Thus, if you win in OT you should get one point, and if it is tied after OT neither team ought to get any points. Yep its harsh, but so is hockey. It ain't a carebear sport, so it shouldn't be watered down with carebear rules like shootouts and points for losers.

I like the shootouts but I think that the losing team shouldnt get that one point. Too many teams when it gets late into a game are playing for the OT/Shootout just to get a cheap point. It should be 2 if you win and 0 if you lose

Looks like the statistics agree with your assertion. Overtime is 21% more likely now than before the rules change in 2000 awarding one point for an OTL. IMO, play for a win or don't play at all.
