Should the gay rights movement align themselves with the NRA?

With these recent attacks in New York and violence across the nation I've been hearing here and there that maybe it would be a good idea if more gay men and lesbians were armed. That got me thinking wouldn't the LGBT community and the NRA teaming up make good politically advantageous situation?

By joining with the NRA we could use them to put pressure on the Republicans to support LGBT rights. We could use them to promote a culture of gun safety in our community with more people protecting themselves. They could use us so that we could force the Democrats to be more supportive of gun rights issues and understanding to the concerns of people from that community. I think it could work. Also by supporting us the NRA would look more progressive and by extension the Republican Party which would gain them more moderates and a few progressives who might be willing to break from the norm as well.

My friend, I may be wrong, but it's my distinct impression that most of the people who are members of the NRA hate most people who aren't straight and white.

I wouldn't say that's a fair characterization. Look at it practically: you have two special interest groups that are not diametrically opposed to one another at all. In fact they want the same thing: being able to conduct their private lives the way they want. I think it would seriously benefit both sides to join hands.

    This.

And the OP's idea that both sides just want to "conduct their private lives any way they want" is a gross oversimplification

    Lighten up Boys!

I think it is quite clear the OP is being sarcastic and taking a refreshingly absurdist stance on a site where, let's face facts, ALL of Us (Myself DEF included) sometimes take things a little too literally.

Attempting to reduce violence by handing out weapons under the guise of "empowerment" is like attempting to cure a disease by infecting as many people as possible and hoping someone still lives under the guise of "medical research."

It is like standing up for Freedom by adding extra slaves to hold the gates open under the guise of "unpaid intern."

It is like being stupid and suggesting that moar stupidity will cure stupidness under the guise of not really being stupid...

I'm being serious. These attacks are only a sign of things to come. People are scrambling for their asses as the status quo is dying. They are becoming violent and we all should be able to defend ourselves.

We shouldn't allow ourselves to become victims. I'm not saying pick fights but we should be protected.

And also this would be politically advantageous for us. The NRA could help us find Republicans who are pro gay who could take to the national stage.

Why do you leftards hate guns? Guns are important for protection. I'm gonna get my first within the year. Hopefully none of your residences get invaded. Three minutes to wait for the cops is an awful long time...

I actually have no real issue with gun ownership in and of itself.

I just think that it should require a license, a period of training and registration.

Nothing more than I went thru to get My driver's license.

I say the same thing about many drugs. Legalize them, regulate them and take the criminal element out of them

And let's face facts Incendiary...Your ruff-n-tumble life in the mean coffee houses of Seattle will most likely lead You to a comfortable suburban home where the biggest threat will be a family of skunks under the cedar deck.

I really don't believe making guns illegal will work.

    It didn't work with liquor.

It has ABYSMALLY failed with drugs.

I also think it is incredibly stupid, as the OP suggests, to hands out weapons to fearful, undereducated individuals and call it EMPOWERMENT.

We ALL know where that is going.

I know You are being serious.

Your scope of vision is EXTREMELY limited by Your age and circumstances.

You may THINK you see a sign of "things to come" but Ya just don't have the life experience yet to back up the vision. You are speculating based on fear.

FEAR NEVER WON A WAR, ENDED A RIOT, GOT A GOVERNMENT TO STOP HIDING A DISEASE OR TURNED A WORLD VIEW AROUND IN ROUGHLY THE AMOUNT OF TIME YOU HAVE BEEN ALIVE.

You see, I was here when HUNDREDS of these kinds of crimes regularly occured and it was ok. The cops laughed and said "too bad faggot."

The Average Joe said "They had it comin' to them."

I was here when a woman getting raped while wearing a short skirt was questioned as to HER motives.

I was here when a virus killed everyone I knew.

We banded together and were often loud and obnoxious and disruptive and unreasonabe and demanding and spent nights in jail and got called names and kept coming back for more BUT no shots were fired from US.

    And WE continue to prevail.

Not because We are sharp shooters. Because We are smart, visionary and quite simply, Right.

We all know what will happen when you give a gun to an angry, scared Person.

Never seems to work in the long run.

For the record, I have no issues with a responsible Individual owning a gun.

It's the bullets I got a problem with.

It's not like I'm advocating everyone becoming the Lone Ranger but I'm saying more of us being armed with something, I don't care what it is, that's going to cut down on these kind of attacks. You're gonna be less likely to attack a gay couple when you're not sure if either or them or both has a gun.

And lining up with the NRA again could be politically advantageous for us.

No, man, read past the shock headlines. Living in fear is a shitty way to live.

And please don't forget how high the suicide rate is among gay people (and how most gun deaths are suicides, and how unlikely one is to succeed at suicide without a gun). To say nothing about domestic violence.

Defending oneself with a gun (against an intruder or the gubmint) is just a cowboy fantasy. Not a rational basis for public policy when lives are at stake.

Many NRA members, myself included, were raised under the impression that the NRA was an organization that promoted responsible gun ownership and gun safety, but in reality, the majority of the NRA's revenue come from the firearm manufactures and the protecting the interest of these corporations is the NRA's real mission

I understand what you are saying, but the NRA is not the right organization. Luckily you don not have to belong to the NRA or be a right wing radical fuck-wad to believe in and want to protect the 2nd amendment.
