There would be a dramatic regional breakdown, though.

Actually it is supposed to be "could", not "couldn't" because the phrase is sarcastic. If you said "couldn't", you're just stating the obvious and the irony is lost.

Sorry to see so much increased acceptability of human cloning next to decreased acceptance of doctor-assisted suicide. But other than that, most of it seems pretty in l;ine with my thoughts.

I don't care what some grammar-nazis on Google who don't actually know how language works have to say. The reason why people say "could care less" is precisely for the reasons I described above.

And if you still don't believe me, read this article by Harvard linguist Steven Pinker, who addresses this particular expression directly:

    http://ling.kgw.tu-berlin.de/lexicography/data/MAVENS.html

PinkerA tin ear for prosody (stress and intonation) and an obliviousness to the principles of discourse and rhetoric are important tools of the trade for the language maven. Consider an alleged atrocity committed by today's youth: the expression I could care less. The teenagers are trying to express disdain, the adults note, in which case they should be saying I couldn't care less. If they could care less than they do, that means that they really do care, the opposite of what they are trying to say. But if these dudes would stop ragging on teenagers and scope out the construction, they would see that their argument is bogus. Listen to how the two versions are pronounced:

    ----COULDN'T-------care-----
    i-------------------------------------LESS

    vs

    I----------------------
    --------------CARE
    ---- could------------ LESS

The melodies and stresses are completely different, and for. a good reason. The second version is not illogical, it's sarcastic. The point of sarcasm is that by making an assertion that is manifestly false or accompanied by ostentatiously mannered intonation, one deliberately implies its opposite. A good paraphrase is, "Oh yeah, as if there was something in the world that I care less about."

I thought you were against strict grammar rules... Wasn't it you who posted the Grammar Nazi thread, about how we shouldn't be grammar Nazis because meaning and usage are regional and vary among different cultures???icon_idea.gif

I'm not against "strict grammar rules" (that phrase is sort of meaningless from a linguist's point of view), I'm against prescriptive rules. My point is that it is inappropriate to disregard "I could care less" as incorrect because there is an inherent logic to the phrase that people insisting that it should be "I couldn't care less" don't understand.

I don't want to completely derail this thread, but I'd be happy to explain what I mean further by PM or something if you are interested.
