It's ironic that once again FEMA shows itself to be somewhat inept and handcuffed by bureaucracy...

ocial media is often recognized narrowly as a way to connect with friends, or to share and read the news. Yesterday it was demonstrated that social media can serve as a medium of mobilization for disaster relief, helping Americans all over the country reach out and help those affected by the tornado in Oklahoma on Monday.

Shortly after the destructive twister tore through the town of Moore outside Oklahoma City , conservative radio personality and talking head Glenn Beck used Twitter to organize a “convoy of hope” to travel to Oklahoma to provide early disaster relief. Within hours, Beck’s team had used Twitter to locate trucks and supplies, and they were on their way, arriving in the Moore area bearing food, water, and diapers.

Beck maintained his ties to the Twittersphere throughout the journey, live-tweeting national updates on the disaster and his personal sentiments. Twitchy posted many of the tweets here. Beck notes from his personal Twitter account that he was leafing through scripture along the way trying to find direction from God. Twitchy also posted tweets from ordinary people who were very thankful to Beck for his prompt mobilization.

The relief effort comes under the umbrella of Beck’s charity, Mercury One. The charity’s mission statement is “To inspire, organize, and mobilize individuals to improve the human condition physically, emotionally, and spiritually with malice towards none and charity for all.” Mercury One has three core principles: restore, faith, and entrepreneurship.

Beck’s convoy of hope has seen remarkable success. In just over a day, it has raised over $500,000. Initially, Beck hoped to raise at least $50,000 but with over 6,000 donations his organization has long surpassed that goal.

Whereas Kevin Durant donated $1 million of his own dollars.

    Kevin Durant > Glenn Beck

    Kevin Durant > Glenn Beck

I think the point here though is how his network has provided for far more assistance than the monetary assistance - eg $1 spent by FEMA << $1 spent by a highly motivated private volunteer

The point here is you like Glenn Beck way too much. There are so many people doing the same kind of things. Why didn't you make a forum for Blake Shelton on all the good he has done for the tornado victims.

Not even remembering if I've heard him talk, I can't say I like or dislike him. It is however remarkable how much he's been able to do with his audience and his organization - particularly as events are unfolding which is when the need is presumably most urgent. I also did post on the five ways anyone can help. On the other hand, your knee jerk reaction to him when he's trying to do some good is unfortunate.

Riddler hasn't heard Glenn Beck speak???

Hahahahahahahahha. That is a lie especially for someone who spews more information on here than anyone else and follows American politics more than anyone.

Good for him for helping out. Just like all the other Americans are doing and don't need to be recognized for being compassionate human beings.

As I said why didn't you make a forum post about Kevin Durant who did far much more good on his own dime.

He hasn't crossed my blog reader. And as to my earlier comment, I'm flattered that you think so, but no, I've never heard him speak. fwiw, I think I've heard Rush Limbaugh once - and only while driving and I haven't heard him since nor would I likely choose to listen to him.

The difference in how the media has treated the FEMA response however between Katrina, and disasters during the past few years has been striking.

You regularly trash American politics (liberal politics, to be specific) and the American way of life, yet you don't live here, don't vote here, and you have little knowledge outside of what you read on sites like breitbart.com.

Why not focus on your own country for once? I mean, I know you wingnuts barely have a leg to stand on in Canada, but why pollute precious U.S. bandwidth with your drivel?

Why not focus on fighting the good wingnut fight in Canada? Surely, you can help to promote the Keystone pipeline and deforestation, pushing for fracking and polluting the environment. Shit, man, there's so much pain you could be inflicting on those in your own back yard. Focus, man, focus.

Seriously. Keep your foreign snout out of U.S. politics and toss your bullshit around somewhere else, where your opinion and input is at least somewhat relevant.

Apparently you're too stupid to realize that the US is only a few hours away, and Canada's largest trading partner to understand that it's not only possible but probable that I travel frequently for work and pleasure to the US. But that's stupid for you. Well, stupid is apparently you.

If Americans are dumb enough to turn down Keystone so that oil can be moved by rail and risk even greater spills by buying its oil elsewhere I'm not terribly concerned. So yeah, as for focus? I'm pretty focused - just not on the things you'd rather not read or hear about. icon_rolleyes.gif

Again, your concern does nothing for the relevance of your input, foreigner. It never will.

Then how come your RJ profile lists Hong Kong, China as your travel destination, not any place in the US? And Toronto & Waterloo in Canada as your 2 locations?

Where is it you visit in the US more frequently than Hong Kong, but fail to list in your profile? And what is your work that takes you to the US? I thought it was offshoring US & Canadian jobs to China. Is that true? You're on this site almost continuously, so you must have a very lenient employer, and/or extremely light & undemanding duties. There are times you post non-stop for hours on end.

That's a fair question - but one also easily answered given that you apparently are so lacking in either intellect or imagination. I visit clients throughout the US while I have offices in Canada and HK. I don't offshore jobs, I do however do contract manufacturing of components. And no, I have never posted hours on end given that I do have other duties, though it's interesting that you insist on making any of these issues about me.

You are so unable to defend or even consider alternative viewpoints without personal attacks or other ad hominems.

After voting against Hurricane Sandy relief, Oklahoma's two senators, Tom Coburn and James Inhofe, rapidly accepted FEMA aid utilizing funds from the very bill they opposed.

"As the ranking member of the Senate committee that oversees FEMA, I can assure Oklahomans that any and all available aid will be delivered without delay," Coburn said in a statement.

"That's totally different," Inhofe told cable TV network MSNBC. "Everybody was getting in and exploiting the tragedy that took place. That won't happen in Oklahoma."
