Just wondering if anyone is worried about genetically modified foods and Monsanto's control over farming.

I believe GMO's are not even just about wholesome foods anymore. It's about power and politics of controlling the lives of farmers and consumers - a new system of slavery.

    Support naturally-grown and heirloom foods.

I'm avoiding any product (not just food) from these companies:

I think GMO is a very interesting science.
The way Monsanto use it just a business model, as greedy as any business model.
The the potential of GMO to address worldwide health and nutrition issue should not be disregarded just because of Monsanto

    +1.

From "Triticum fever". The wheat we eat today does not resemble the wheat our ancestors consumed.

Yes. It should be disregarded. Because in many people's bodies, genetically modified food is no longer seen as food by their immune system. Which would be the antithesis of health and nutrition.

There are already foods in existence to sustain our populations. Grains rot in silos waiting for a fair price in a manipulated market. Several family farms have been consolidated into mass agriculture. Due to the next generation moving to the city. The farm itself has become corporate. The advent of ADM and ethanol has created a non-food market for the crops. People have become so detached from where their food actually comes from.

There are ancient grains like quinoa and super foods like soy.

It's like saying there is no need for medical research because we already have aspirin and antibiotics.
GMO is a just a scientific field, with a huge range of potential applications, not just foods.
Would you want to ban computer science because some use it for online frauds ?

i was listening to a session on NPR a few weeks back talking about the lawsuit Monsanto successfully filed against the guy who bought grain from the community silo to re-plant his field. I seriously shouted to an empty Miata "THAT'S BULLSHIT". This goes in the same category as companies trademarking the human genome. I mean, seriously? You're going to tell me you own the rights to my or someone else's DNA? Fuck that!

Right here with you, DNA should not be copyright material, only the fabrication process.

exactly. people have been breeding new strains of various crops for years. Its like buying a 3D printer and making another 3D printer with it. That'll work fine but then the company comes out with a newer, better model. Well you can stick with your old one and do the same level and quality of production as you have been or invest in the new technology to increase your quality or efficiency. Farmers should be able to re-seed their crops using reserved portions of their last harvest. If they come up short on seed or want to invest in the newest strain THEN make them shell out the money. Everyone always screams and complains about Obama being "socialist" but is that really such a bad thing when our capitalist economy supports companies like Monsanto and our government vetoes reductions in student loan interest rates?

My biggest gripe is that farmers aren't allowed to save seeds from year to year. they have to buy seeds from monsanto every year....oh, and what company also is affiliated with monsanto? Round Up. go figure, right?

+1: They also used to be known as Union Carbide. If that sounds familiar, it's because they killed over 3,000 people in Bhopal, India with a poorly designed chemical processing plant.

I've spent the last month ridding my kitchen of all GMO's. It's absolutely terrifying how Monsanto has infiltrated our government. After Obama promised GMO labeling he then went and appointed a former Monsanto executive to the head of the FDA. He's dead to me now. As bad as Bush. It's all about profits over people to these guys. That's it.

GMO's are not inherently bad, it is essentially what humans have done for thousands of years in selective breeding of domesticated plants/animals taken to the next level with technology. Research in this field should be allowed, but the cronyism of Monsanto and the U.S. government is terrible and should be stopped.

Well stated..Obama backtracking on GMO labeling was extremely disturbing.

Profits mean nothing if the air, water and food supply is contaminated.. You cant eat, drink or breathe money.

Seriously. I'm appalled by his complete reversal on the things he just about swore he would do. End the war over seas. Close Guantanamo. Label GMOs. Reign in big government. Increase the transparency of the administration. The severe civil liberty restricting legislation he's been signing left and right. The list goes on and on. In terms of long term damage, Obama has done more to hasten the fall of a free America than any president in the history of this country. icon_neutral.gif

Obama is just as much of a betrayer of our freedoms as Mitt "the Robot" Romney would have been.

You pretty much have to sell your soul to the Corporatist Kleptocracy that runs western civilization to have a shot at high office in the USA.

That and pray to the Owl God Molech at the Bohemian Grove.

That aside... yeah, GMO foods = cancer pills.

Best to grow your own (heirloom seed stock) veggies and herbs of possible, supplemented by 100% certified organic foods and stay away from the poison foods served in cleverly devised packaging at your local Kroger's or Piggly-Wiggly.

MissAndry saidI thought you were a conservative.

In most regards I consider myself to lean more to conservative and libertarian ideas - but I also am a believer in giving a fair shot to small(er) businesses and farmers, and giving people healthier choices.

And before someone plays the Ayn Rand card, that approach is also fraught with danger.

Monopolies and monopoly-like conglomerations are inherently anti-freedom, especially when they work to remove competition and choice.

While they may provide some degree of innovation thru the power of financing R&D that smaller businesses cannot, any trade-off that effectively poisons its own customers and makes a primary focus of its legal activity to suppress healthier alternatives is very much one that borders on being criminal.

I think it's too late to just boarder on being criminal. Especially when the research suggests that there is mortal harm to be had from gm food and Round Up. icon_eek.gif

You are the dumbest person, like, ever. What you don't know and don't understand would fill 1000 mainframe computers.
Listen psychopath, stop trolling me around these forums. You obviously have nothing intelligent to say and it is very clear to any sound minded person that you don't know how to think. You have nothing credible to contribute to these forums so why don't you just get lost.

Dude you are in very desperate need of some serious psychiatric help. There is something radically wrong with you. All that rage and hatred tells me that you are one mentally unstable, miserable old fool. You definitely need to be permanently locked up in a psychiatric ward for your own good.
