Not sure if there has been a forum for this, but I am really disturbed by it. Just seems so mean-spirited and wrong to hang a life-size Sarah Palin doll from the roof with a rope around her neck. Discuss

people burn leaders in effigy all the time. my high school mascot got lynched during homecoming my senior year (not on the same scale as the sarah palin doll, but still). it's insulting if you like the person being voo-doo'ed, but beyond that it's not something all that bad. would you have started this post in 1998 when clinton was being treated the same way?

I see....Hmmmm....I wonder if the same criteria would be applied if say they were hanging a popular GAY celebrity from a roof with a rope around their neck. Funny? A decoration?

it's happened before, it'll happen again. freedom of speech means people have to accept the consequences of what they say.

Is it really any different than say... an image of Palin or McCain as Satan?

To die, or be murdered, to me would be a FAR better outcome than to be likened to the The Father of Lies...

Furthermore... look at Catholic iconography. The images of the martyred... and even the Christ.

If I were a Palin supporter, perhaps I would think about giving those who find the hung Palin amusing THAT remix!

When I saw it I was outraged it should be taken down it sends the wrong message. It's just wrong and it should have never been put it.

It's horrible. There is nothing funny about it displays poor taste and it's very disrespectful not to mention offensive!icon_redface.gif

Yeah, I think it is in bad taste and counter productive too, the woman is her own worst enemy she needs no help.

It is shocking/disturbing. I wouldn't do it, but I do believe in free speech. They say it is pop art or something which I guess could be true. Then again there have already been several "Obama Hussein" hangings ..

interesting that there is a Star of David on the ghosts head also in the video

i disagree: people should be allowed to burn the flag, hang people in effigy, and in other ways express their outrage. we don't have to agree with the message to defend the right to express it.

keep thomas jefferson's thought in mind: "the rights of one man end where the rights of the next man begin."

so... expressing outrage and inciting violence balance precariously on a thin wire; however, i'd rather have the balance than lose the wire.

I agree that Freedom of Speech should be protected, but often-times those who practice it to the extreme have no accounting for taste.

    Yes, I support free speech.

The flag is different than an effigy. An effigy proposes violence to that person, it suggests.

For example, if the effigy where Senator Obama with a bunch of KKK figures below the whole thing would be rather less funny.

I didn't say they should be obliged to take down their Sarah Palin effigy, I just said it is unnecessary and in really bad taste.

We ought to voluntarily up the quality of the political discourse, and West Hollywood is a good place to start (I lived there for 13 years)

Obviously, the offending party has very poor taste. Anyone with a modicum of taste would instantly recognize that Sarah Palin would clash with everything in West Hollywood, effigy or not.

curious and ursa are both right: people SHOULD exercise better "taste," but it doesn't mean they HAVE to. what we HAVE to do is support the rights of people who should have more sense, but don't. it's the only way to support our own rights.

I could not have said it better URSA! It's just wrong on so many levels.

On a very personal level for me. That's is not free speech. UGH!

I think the low roads both sides have reduced themselves to traveling on is scary. I can't remember seeing anything so hateful and not funny before. This woman is a mother for God's sake. Political satire is one thing, hanging a dummy (lol) from the roof with a noose is just wrong.
When not so clever people who are desperate for attention attempt to be provocative, this is what you get.
I worry about what happens when all of this is over and wondering if we can put this behind us. A lot of what I have seen on youtube and even in these forums has left a pretty dark mark that I can't imagine I can forget after November 4rth.

I don't think there's anything "wrong" with what these people are doing. I think people should be allowed to burn flags and effigies and all the like. All speach should be protected.

But I think there are a lot more clever and constructive ways to get a message across. I'm very disgusted by a lot of Palin's views and ideas, but me wrapping a noose around a look alike doesn't accomplish much. I don't see a burning effigy and think to myself "boy... he makes a good point about Palin's views on the economy."

I'm not disturbed by it... I honestly just think it's pointless.

It ain't pretty, it's free speech. It's ugly, poor taste, offensive from any perspective. It is one of the reasons our soldiers go into foreign lands and die in wars. Don't be so quick to want to control it or stop it when people have died to ensure it's allowance. Counter it in productive ways.

People have died in order for me to go forth amongst the peoples and spread bad taste. I will not dishonor their deaths.
