To those who lost lives and the men here who miss them - lovers, brothers, fathers and sons -
    To those who lost limbs
    To those who lost innocence
To those who surrendered something complicated and irretrievable
To those who continue to serve, including those who transitioned into careers in law enforcement -
To those who ever served in the armed forces, today - once called Remembrance Day - is more than BBQs and celebration, it's a time for the rest of us to stand up and honor you.
    Thank you.

    Truly. Deeply. With great respect.

    Thank you.

And, finally, to those who did so during a time when your sexual identity was cause for discharge, particularly those whose careers were unjustly ended as a result, thank you for sacrificing what very few understand. You lead the way in spite of losing things few can understand. We are grateful.

*caveat lector*. - this thread is not intended to incite or promulgate any allegiance to one particular political party or perspective of said party, or POV on war and the politics thereof; to whit the OP respectfully requests posters exercise restraint and consider the simple act of appreciating the sacrifices, dedication and service of individual service members. Thank you.

To all my fellow vets, thank you.

    Always worth repeating:

    In Flanders Field

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.
    John McCrae

    Peace.

    Mike

Thanks to every veteran, to those serving now and to their families who have the burden of worry for their safety.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
    I am in a thousand winds that blow;
I am the softly falling snow.

    I am the gentle showers of rain;
I am the fields of ripening grain.
    I am in the morning hush;
I am in the graceful rush.

Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.

I am the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

Sadly, 22 veterans a day commit suicide. Please make an effort if you are in a position to do so to hire a vet as their unemployemnt rate hovers 2% above the national average of 7.5%...

Not to be pedantic (which means I'm about to be pedantic) but this is Memorial Day, not Veterans' Day. Today we honor those who gave their lives in defense of our country.

A beautiful sentiment, OP, beautifully expressed. Thank you to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms the rest of us enjoy and the values we share.

I think we remember those who not only literally gave their lives but who gave something that changed their lives forever - limbs, peace of mind, et al. War kills in many different ways, and it's a good thing to reflect on that. Or so I was taught and I believe.

Meet America's fastest-growing homeless population: women veterans
    Salon

One way to honor the lost would be to do a better job at taking care of those who make it home.

Thank you for supporting George Bush who closed up lots of parks , keeping gays in the closet , putting up a big fence to our brothers south of the border , Thanks for pointing the finger at the wrong nation and invading it while your freedom back home is being rewritten by congress . Thanks for gas going from $1 a gallon to over $3 in a decade . Thank for supporting all this change . Make a carrier out of it and stay enlisted .

Clearly you can neither read not reason.

You are a pathetic and ungrateful waste of a man and nothing more than the angry, uneducated, parroting and pathetic Gay version of a Westboro Baptist Church parishioner.

Yet, like those misguided hate mothering sheep, you're free to speak as you please. You do so standing on ground in the heart of which are buried men and women far, far greater than you and who died for a principal that ironically is there to give liberty to your vicious and sarcastic little ass.

Posturing while wrapped in the flag of righteous indignation, you remain free, but no less pathetic; disrespecting the lives of people who, even in death, are better than you could ever hope to be.

Go ahead and call it fighting for a cause , that cause is killing people who never stood on American soil or did you harm . Self defense is not terrorism . The crap put in your heads at school is propaganda and you will never be able to open up your eyes to the truth .
