You need to expand and contract the calves as you would any muscle if you want to attain hypertrophy. Crossfit incorporates many sports, - including box jumping, cycling, skipping and sprinting...all of those, if done properly, will create far more NATURAL concentric and eccentric muscle movements in your calves than your average calf building weight machine at the gym...especially because you use it in compound, rather than in isolation.
With cycling, it's always important to move the heel down all the way. If you jog or sprint, taking your foot and heel through the entire motion. If you fast skip, you make quick tip-toe like movements. All of it will work your calves. Otherwise, try ballet - they usually have awesome legs!
