Everyday well when I was a kid was just going outside, and playing our hearts out until we had to go inside. Also pulling pranks on each other and playing hot butter beans icon_smile.gif good times.

    Good topic!

    • Weekends at a friend's lake house with members of my at-the-time band including my BF's dad who since passed away
    • Weekends in Asbury Park, either for concerts or just on the beach and boardwalk
    • A particular concert in 2010: The Gaslight Anthem, Tim Barry and a band called Chamberlain which had stopped playing live years before I discovered them, but reunited for a tour that summer. The venue was Penn's Landing and if you ever get the chance to see a show there, it is really nice.
    • Working at a bar in Atlantic City one summer, which is how I met my ex.

1979--The summer I came out at age 22

I went to my first public gay event. The MAGIC picnic in Madison, WI.
I saw 700 half-naked gay men dancing to disco at Lake Monona picnic pavilion. It was pretty awesome.

Loading up the canoe with camping gear and a few coolers full of food and beer and paddling out to some random island on the lake to spend the weekend.

I was 16. My parents were out of town and I was madly in love. He was gorgeous, smart, and good. I spent days at his place, his parents didn't mind, and he would come visit me. He didn't live that far just a town or two over.

One day he says he has to go back home to work at an event his mum is hosting, so he says he'll come back the next day. Around 1 in the morning he texts me and asks me to go to the bus stop because he thinks he dropped his license there so I run over.

The boy was standing there in his rumpled tux, with wilted roses and his hair all out of place. I have no idea how he managed to get back to my area on time for the last bus but he did. I still remember how warm it was, him standing under the streetlamp near the busstop. No cars at the intersection. Just him and me standing alone.

When I feel down this is definitely a memory I think of fondly. He ended up being my first a few weeks later.

In general I have find memories of summertime as a kid.

Playing kick-the-can with the neighborhood kids, being in Little League, walking up to the Dairy Queen stand (back when they were stands) with my sisters for blue-raspberry slushes, my grandpa taking me to the driving range to teach me how to golf, shooting hoops in the driveway while listening to my a-Ha and Duran Duran cassettes on my boombox, many other things. I miss the simplicity of those times.

Summer - first summer with a bf. And in my last year of university! It progressed fast! We had summer classes and would spend the day just lying in the sun and giving shy kisses. After class we'd go back to his place where he had a pool, or chill at my house. Then I moved to Ottawa and we fell apart icon_sad.gif

    Ah well, such is life

One of the best summer memories for me as a kid happened when I was 13. I took myself on a bike hike and was gone for about 5 hours. This was a huge thrill for me back then because I was never allowed to go anywhere without adult supervision. I was always watched closely and never allowed to do anything like this - because I had an uncle who was kidnapped for ransom and died in the early 50's. I never knew him. After that - the family never let any of the grandchildren have any freedom. The day I made my escape and was gone all those hours was a fluke - with the help thinking somebody else had charge of me that day. It may not sound like much of a thrill to anyone else, but for me it stands out as a great memory - a day of escape and freedom to do as I wished. Nobody ever found out about it.icon_cool.gif

I took the bus to Provincetown each weekend during the summers of 1979, 80, and 81. I never made reservations in advance, there were always some cheap rooms for rent in little rooming-houses back in those days. It was exciting, the scenery, atmosphere, and guys were great, and it was a great introduction into the gay community. I haven't been back in 30 years, though.

From 1989 thru 2000, I spent a week each summer at a little retreat run by the Unitarian Church on the beach in Saco, Maine, which sponsored a Gay Week. Some years I camped in a pup-tent in the campground, others I stayed in a room. The camaraderie was great, many different activities, and it was a wonderful place to make friends.

I also enjoyed taking my kids to the playground in the park when they were small.

Very early childhood summer at day camp here http://www.westmountcc.com/. Looks like most of the property's since been sold off and the place converted to just a banquet hall.

Me & my childhood friend holding the sign. You can tell by our faces that we didn't like that guy in the middle and I think I recall our counselors making us sit there. We were pissed.
    day-camp.jpg

And older childhood summers at sleep away camp for 8 weeks every summer here http://www.camplakota.com/. I'm so jealous they have go-carts now.

The summer camp pic in my profile on the bunk porch is me laughing at some complete asshole who was acting like hot shit, but fell over his own two feet and went rolling down that hill, just as my dad had his camera on me.

Now I have a sudden urge to go to http://www.campcamp.com/. Looks like fun.
