This weekend the far-right racist group the English Defence League will be planning obscene and potentially violent protests across Britain. Please sign the petition indicating that you will not tolerate their hatred and bigotry.

As far as I know the EDL isn't racist, they are anti-islamic extremists. Nowehre on their website do they mention anything regarding race and I have seen videos of their demonstrations and there are quite a few non-whites in there.
It's very ironic to see anti-fascists and some LGBT people fight against them. I wonder what those peoples' lives would be like if they lived under islamic law icon_rolleyes.gif

If I was living in Britain I definitely would not sign this petition and I don't see why any homosexual should. Wasn't there a video out a few months back of "Muslim Patrols" going around London harassing gay people and women? I'm pretty sure those guys weren't EDL.

They are anti-Islam in general, which isn't acceptable. Muslims have a right to live and worship in peace without having obscenities thrown at them.

Islamic extremism is not representative of the entire faith.

EDL is also against all immigration in general, including immigrants from Eastern Europe, who face terrible prejudice already.

I know Americans look at this sort of thing differently, as Civil Rights is a relatively new thing in the US, but in Britain these sort of bigots are not to be tolerated.

I dont know, never seen a muslim defending the rights of homosexuals.
As for Civil Rights, freedom of expression is the most important one IMO. They should be free to worship whoever they want, but their hurt feelings isn't any more important than the EDL's right to say what they want.

Its not hurt feelings, its violence, and events like this can lead to much larger things.

I have no wish to talk to someone like you.

Your sole intention is to cause a row.
you are beneath comtempt of the vast sway of the British people.

I have nothing more i want or wish to say so this will be the last you will hear from me on this thread. I wish you a good day and good bye.

Then please show me a video of an EDL member assaulting a muslim during one of their demonstrations.
And incide violence upon themselves? Why? Because they are speaking their minds?
Where are the civil rights you were defending just now... whenever someone says something you dont like that gives you the right to assault them? Very interesting. icon_lol.gif

And if standing up to bigotry is causing a row, then so be it. I can live with that.

''First they came for the communists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the socialists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the Catholics,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Catholic.

    Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.''

FitGwynedd, I noticed that despite your argument here with AaronH20P, you have him on your HOTLIST.
AHHHH, that's what I love about RJ.

Back to topic, I think the Islamic community is getting smeared by the actions of a minority who are clearly INSANE.

But my question for you or anyone else following this closely is

WHAT ARE ISLAMIC LEADERS IN BRITAIN DOING TO ADDRESS THE THREAT THAT A FEW OF THEIR MENTALLY-DISTURBED MEMBERS POSE?

What is being done, within the community, to condemn the few-yet-famous voices of violence in their leadership?

"Islamic leaders have publicly condensed the attacks countless times"

Ok, I'm assuming you mean "condemned" rather than "condensed".

I have no doubt that this is true BUT still I think there is a burden on the Islamic community to make sure that their message condemning violence is heard.

I also think it would benefit Britain's Islamic community to take strong steps to recognize and address the instigators of violence within. I'll call this SELF-POLICING.

People who respond through violent action or incite violence do not deserve any of our time, regardless of their motive. This is not the way to convince anyone that your ideology is a valid course.

This includes both the EDL (or any other hate organisation) as well as any person who commits a violent act purporting a religious provocation.

    - One man committing a horrific act claiming a religious motive is NOT a representative of the Islamic faith or its followers.
    - A group of aggressively charged racist hooligans are NOT representative of patriots.

The beauty of a democracy is that everyone has the right to petition, the right to protest, the right of free speech and a free press. All these freedoms must be honoured, no matter what your thoughts on a group's views.

Even though I strongly disagree with the EDL's ideology, they have the right to protest. As do anti-fascists.

To me, it's just a great shame that the distinction between protesting and rioting is being lost in the UK, and all too often things end violently, with both parties often to blame.

gayinterest, I think this is the balanced view.

I hope there will be enough of a police presence to draw the line between angry speech and violence.

Some have, but yet out of those same leaders' very mosques, we see jihadi after jihadi emerging. I wonder where they become fundamentalist. Also, take a look at this picture.
