So sad to read that while writing the last few paragraphs of my novel which features All in the Family, that Jean Stapleton has passed away. She was 90 years old. Thank you Jean for the great characters you portrayed. http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/01/showbiz/jean-stapleton-obit/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

I saw the headline on the news and gasped/paused in disbelief.

I LOVED Jean Stapelton. She was a brilliant actress, irreplaceable. It takes a fine woman to play such a "dingbat".

I still continue to watch her on youtube and the most riveting episodes being when she was nearly raped on her birthday and the goodbye scene when Mike/Gloria moved to California. She somehow acted with such raw emotion that it engaged me into the seeming reality of the moment. Many times, I shed tears and laughter watching her.

    Goodbye my dear.icon_cry.gif

Love the "Suggested for Mature Audiences" in the beginning...Mike Spivak #1 was sexy! Not so Mike #3 and the ultimate choice. RIP Edith Bunker.

One of my favorite shows of all time. She was so perfect with her accent, and her behavior reminded me of my own grandmother. Jeepers, I'll miss her.

My favorite episode was when Edith was going through menopause and she told Archie to "stifle!"

    RIP Miss Stapleton

She was such a great actor that people really believed she was that ditzy, when she wasn't that way in real life at all. And her comedic timing was superb, as well as the wonderful nuances of her voice and the expressions that perfectly brought out every joke in her lines, and even created comedy between the words. A perfect foil for Caroll O'Connor's crude bluster, they were an acting team made in Heaven. May she be performing there with him again, if such a place exists.

She did not really like the role of Edith, maintaining that it kept women in a place they should not remain. She was a fine actress, though, and did her job with consummate skill.

Nevertheless after seeing Stapleton's portrayal of Edith it will be impossible to forget that there are simple, good people out there who play a large part in the lives of us all.
