I didn't know "No homo" was offensive. Thoughts?

"no homo" is always offensive, because it is implying that the person saying it does not want to be perceived as homosexual for saying it because they think that homosexuals are lesser than them.

It doesn't offend me, personally. I just think it's one of the most annoying phrases I've ever heard. It's what all the 13-16 year old homophobic kids say and it's really getting old... It's just like hearing, "your mom". I'd think that both phrases would have completely died out by now, but I guess not.

I don't get it. Did he just randomly throw in the words "no homo" into what he was saying? Is he supposed to be doing some sort of subliminal message thing? icon_confused.gif

ok,, I get why he said it this time.. he was just clarifying that it's not his asshole that got stretched out because he is not gay... and of course every time I hear the words "stretched out" I always think of some gaping hole. icon_rolleyes.gif glad he clarified.

I thought it was kind of funny, and I understood the joke. I wasn't offended.

Because saying "no homo" is sugar-coated way of saying "faggots should die and burn in hell, so I'm not one of those abominations of humankind."

"No homo" is the greatest phrase since the invention of the phrase, "This is the greatest invention since the invention of sliced bread."
    (Can you follow that?)
Straight men have a problem expressing affection for each other and these two words free them up to say what they want. "No homo" only means "don't think I'm hitting on you which is possible in this modern world where we recognize gay people are everywhere and they look like you and me."

I have only heard people who are comfortable with gays use this expression. I'm sure phobes use it too though.

    I like the term "homo."
    "This guy's a hetero."
    "That guy's a homo."

But you say it among friends. Not at a press conference!

That's a little exaggerated don't you think? I like JohnSpotter's idea better, the phrase "no homo" being more about "I'm aware there may be homosexuals around but just want it known I am not one of them."

I'm sorry but this is ridiculous.

    No Homo works like this:

Dang dude, you have such a nice body.... :No Homo".

Since you declare "no homo", you are not gay.

While its not offensive to me (or most of the folks i know) its an extension of the homophobic "bro" culture that perpetuates ignorant stereotypes. Maybe $75k was excessive but he was in the wrong for saying something that ignorant on a national television interview. Major sports players are learning that they can't just do as they please. They are, for better or for worse, role models to our children and they have to consider that those kids are going to emulate their behaviours.

It seems the only appropriate response is... "No, homo."

In the UK we have the same issue with the word 'gay' being used:

'That's just so gay'...with the younger kids it means 'That's just rubbish'.

Most of them don't even equate to being homosexual nowadays...even if it was originally meant that way.

There have been issues with Radio presenters and celebs using it for the last couple of years.

I don't find it to be a slur as I've heard it described by some journalists. Still, I find it offensive, but more for how stupid the term is than the meaning itself. Plus, my "favorite" no homo moment ever was in Cam'ron's "Get it Ready" where he actually says, "Suck a dick. No homo." To this day, I think that might be the dumbest thing that's ever been said.

In case anyone is wondering why the fine was $75K, before saying "no homo" Hibbert said that he didn't care if he got fined by the NBA. Looks like he might have provoked the NBA to make the fine harsher than it would have otherwise been.

The NBA and the club usually designate certain charities to receive the money from fines. This is also typical for the NFL.
