No one cares. They're all preoccupied by what Beyonce, the Kardashians, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are doing. It's not a material world, it's a fantasy world. icon_neutral.gif

If either of you lived in a real police state you'd have been 'disappeared' ages ago. Get real.

It's a slide towards a police state that has already begun.

The closest slide we ever got to a police state was under Bush. Remember CIA black prisons, secret renditions, water boarding, effective suspension of Habeas Corpus? And best of all the Patriot Act, which still continues to stain our Constitution. And despite Obama's attempts to close down Bush's Gitmo, Republicans in Congress have made that a political impossibility.

Blind hatred for a former politician is clouding your reasoning. Just because a bad policy was implemented during one administration doesn't mean it should continue under others forever. That is childish, "he started it..." I thought people wanted change, not more of the same. Where is the commitment to civil liberties, or does that suddenly no longer matter when the current president is viewed as a messiah?

If we are talking civil liberties, why is the easy availability of firearms more important than the right of a school child not to be shot in the head in her classroom? Far from being a police state, the US is a state where too many ordinary citizens like to play at being the police.

This illustrates a profound misunderstanding of the American way. It also assumes that making guns illegal will magically cause all evil to disipate and all guns to vanish. Magic wands are only in cartoons, me mate.

I thought the subject under discussion was civil liberties versus protecting the population. Are the Right only interested in the subject when they can pin the blame on government?

I suppose HNDSMKANSAN, living in the heart of America, doesn't understand the American way either.

P.S. Brits don't really speak like Dick Van Dyke's character in Mary Poppins.

Lol, "blind hatred" and "messiah." So stupid, all that means is that you can't conceive of someone disagreeing with you on a principled basis. Says more about you than them.

I'd rather talk about the actual issue to which both parties have contributed, rather than fussing about blame.

Correct ..... BOTH parties have contributed plenty to this and technology has enabled them to do it. It just kinda sorta sneaks up on you, and by the time you realize what's happened over the last couple of decades, it's too late to unwind it.

Is anybody talking about solving the problem? Who is willing to sponsor legislation that weakens the Patriot Act?

I think you point, Blakes7, is that no one wants to do anything about it. My point is more specific. The very ones making so much noise about all this spying are the ones who would fight tooth and nail to prevent any changes that might fix the problem.
