With all the discussion over the redesign, I'm curious what you think would make the forums more interesting and increase participation.

^^^ Water really must've been cold....

Anyways, I'd say there should be a way to know if someone mentions you in the forums...I'd like that.

Since they changed the colors I can't tell which emails I've read because they're all in red.

If someone gets blocked, block their ISP info, or however you can identify them regardless of new account name. These zombie trolls who cannot die have got to go, they're killing RJ.

Buttons along the bottom of the posts where you can vote up a post; love, funny, agree, educational, etc. No down voting like disagree. And the ability to hide the buttons you don't want to see.

I use a forum where they have these buttons, and a disagree button, and I feel that the disagree button is invariably misused. When you disagree with a post you don't just click the disagree button and move on, you either don't click it at all, but you always provide an explanation of why you disagree. Clicking it without explaining why you disagree is largely a waste of time.

A count on each message showing how many times it's been replied to. I.e., typically you'll reply to an individual post in the thread, not just the thread. Similar to how quote works here but the quote is automatic. So change the quote button to reply. Then there's also a reply to thread button at the top and bottom.

The quoted post's content is initially folded/hidden and you can click on it to expand it in place.

Each message (not just the thread) has a url that can be linked to.

An option to jump directly to most recent post. All of the other forums that I use have this... goes a long way to make multiple-page threads bearable.

LIMIT THE NUMBER OF DAILY POSTS.
Sock accounts are usually acting out a vendetta so they post a hundred attacks or intentionally disruptive comments.

Don't we already have a version of that? That's the method I use most often for the forums. Click on Forums, check Updated since last login, and click on GO. You get of list of posts ordered by most recent.

Topic threads should become inactive after 60-90 days with no posts.
They could still be read, but no new posts added- keeps those old threads from coming back from the dead.

Besides all the above... how about following the guidelines set up by the people who gave us this great site for free.

Read this an hour later and it comes off as confrontational. I didn't mean it that way!

include its own spellchecker in the forum posting section. Posting from a cellphone can be a real pain.

People should also check to see the current topics before starting their own. We presently have three (count 'em three!) threads going at once about the new RJ colors.
What I'd REALLY like to see is a way to block hidden members from certain threads. Nothing against hidden members in general but too many join the "How hot is the guy above you" threads and fuck up the works.

P.S. How hot is the guy above me? 12 month calendar hot.

Or page numbers for the threads on the forum view so you can just skip to the page you want.
