So there are some fraternities I'm thinking about trying to join but now I'm backing down from that because of the elitist attitudes, beer, drunk, butt-chugging, date rape, turkey torture etc. If any of you ever been in a frat please tell me if you ever witnessed these kinds of actions?

    Matiz..turkey torture?

This one fraternity in Kansas, threw a party, got drunk of course, and they were all throwing this turkey around like it was a football, the poor creature was screaming and crying. IT's limbs were breaking and it was found dead! This is a true story google it.

Well there's definitely beer and drinking in my fraternity, but there is no date rape, "turkey torture," or butt chugging.

I was in a fraternity in undergrad, and experienced none of those things. The key is finding the right fraternity for you. The one I joined was accepting of everyone. They initiated people regardless of race or sexual orientation. We were more concerned with what kind of a man the candidate in question was. If he possessed any of the qualities that might involve him in the actions you stated, we wouldn't think twice about not giving him a bid.

And all of this isn't to say that we didn't have drunken nights. Those were frequent and always fun, but we did have brothers who didn't drink, and we respected their decision. So, find the right one for you, and if there isn't one on campus that seems legitimate, I would say just don't waste your time pledging.

There's also the option of joining a professional fraternity as opposed to a social one. It's a good way to start networking within your area of interest, and there's less of an emphasis on partying. The drama is pretty hard to avoid though if its co-Ed, which is more likely with professional fraternities.

I pledged to two and left both. It's not really worth your time.

I joined Tau Kappa Epsilon and it was the...WORST college decision I ever made. They treated me like second class, they were total douche bags, and they made lots of homophobic jokes knowing that I was gay and out.

I dropped the frat and not even a month later, they got kicked off my university's campus.

    SCORE!

I joined a professional fraternity and it was one of my best experiences in college. I learned a lot, had a lot of fun, and made really good friends. There is a lot of drama but you'll learn how to deal with it.

I was Greek as an undergrad in both social and professional organizations. Bottom line; it is what you make of it. Like others said...there will be drama and there will be stupidity. Just like the real world.

Rushed a relatively subdued house at Emory that was a rape(and smoke)-free environment. Nationals do not tolerate 'boys will be boys' behavior en masse....so the 'butt chugging, turkey raping' chapters are decertified ASAP.

butt chugging? good grief. turkey tosses? messed up. sadistic. and as for TKE. what is it with that frat? at my alma mater, james madision university, TKE got kicked out of the school and the charter was pulled for 10 years. after they were allowed back, they had a wild fall rush party and tossed a baby grand piano out the second story window. they are now banned for life. i still cannot get over the concept of the butt chugging though. talk about a near death experience. jeezze you kids today...........

Never experienced any of these when I pledged. You may be looking at the wrong fraternities. Try and connect with some of the guys before you pledge and see if you think you will make a good fit into their group.
