Thinking about spending a few days in Ft. Lauderdale next month and wondering if any of you have stayed at one of the guest houses mentioned above recently? If so, what did you think of the place? I'm considering Pineapple Point, The Grand, Worthington and Cabanas.

Pineapple Point looks nice but it isn't on the beach and also isn't in Wilton Manors where most of the gay activity is. But if it is really nice, I'd still consider it.

Cabanas is on Wilton Manors but it doesn't look as nice as the other places. Anyone know?

The Grand and Worthington are right on the beach which is a plus. Grand seems nicer but Worthington seems like a bigger property which could be nice if looking for others to hang out with. Anyone here been to both and have a preference between the two?

Pineapple Point is neither very near the beach, nor near Wilton Manors, but it's very attractive, nice property & views. Cabanas is on the very edge of Wilton Manors, you'll need a car or taxi to get you to Wilton Drive in the heart of town where most of the gay spots are. It's on the Middle River, not near the ocean, and you can rent kayaks there. The pool is quite small, and I don't find the property very romantic.

The Grand is the largest gay hotel, with a full service spa. But while it and some of these other places say they're clothing optional, that often only applies to limited sections of their property. And not always even at the pool where you want it most, because of nearby high rises that look down onto them. Or in the case of the Cabanas, because of private riverfront homes and passing boaters that can look right across the water onto much of the grounds.

Phone and confirm how clothing optional they really are if important to you. If you're interested in the Fort Lauderdale beaches, the Grand, Worthington, Alcazar and a few others along North Birch Road and its side streets are the closest (though still a good walk, not really "on the beach"). The unofficial gay beach is Sebastian, named for Sebastian Street, which you can Google Map to see its relationship to the various gay resorts on Birch.

I used to like the Royal Palms, with its Euro minimalist interiors, and it has its own bar, which most of these other small houses do not. But lately the staff has gotten a bad reputation for service, and I've been avoiding going there. (Not to stay, I live here, but sometimes for drinks with friends)

If you stay in Wilton Manors you will need transportation to the beach. WM has a few other guesthouses right off the drive, much closer than the Cabanas, like Ed Lugo (co-ed), but they're quite small with few amenities or scenic views. They're main draw is the Drive.

Those you mentioned sound nice, but you might want to check out The Pillars as well. This is where I've stayed over & over - and I love it.

The Pillars is very elegant and a bit upscale. It has a lovely westward view of the Intracoastal Waterway, facing some of the private mansions, and is right off Sebastian Street. It reminds me a bit of Key West places. It also has something many of the other Birch Street hotels don't - some off-street parking of its own.

But it's not gay, which I assumed was on our OP's checklist, based on the places he had looked into himself.

Thank you both for the input! I was looking for a gay guest house. I think I'm learning toward staying at one of the places on the beach. Royal Palms wasn't on my radar but I looked at photos of the place and it seems pretty cool. I'll have to see if I can find some more recent reviews of Royal Palms and if there is a trend in comments about the reputation for service going down.

You're welcome, and do check the Palms. We were hearing that from multiple sources, and the manager got a little snotty with my husband about doing a function there. But as I said we don't actually stay there (or anywhere except outside of this area), although I was given a tour of the place following their renovation, and used their poolside bar at times. It's certainly an attractive place, very Euro to my eyes, although my own taste runs to period Key West Ramshackle whenever we stay on the Island down there.

So maybe they've cleaned up their act a bit, and that would be fine, I'd like to know so we can start recommending them again. They used to have a Sunday pool party, so check into that, too, maybe a good day to include in your itinerary. Ask about clothing optional if a factor for you, they had some issue with a code violation reference nudity and the proximity of the bar, not sure how that was resolved.

So they are part of the same complex, but Worthington is the nice one - relatively speaking?

Check reviews on trip advisor. They were for the most part pretty accurate.

I'm making some mental notes here and I hope to get a report from sashaman on what the choice was and how it was enjoyed.

There is a good possibility that sometime in 2014, I might want to book a place in Ft. Lauderdale for a night or two as "we" will be enjoying that area and maybe visiting friends as "we" may be coming back from a cruise.

A little peek at a "secret" there......Thanks for the input for sashaman, Art. I'm taking notes too.

So I went with Worthington. I decided I'd rather be closer to the beach than the bars in Wilton Manors. Royal Palms looked nice but the rooms seemed very small compared to other places.

If anyone else is gonna be in Fort Lauderdale the second week in July and wants to hang out by the beach or meet for a bite to eat, let me know. icon_cool.gif
