Sick of Homophobia in South África!

Recently on Facebook there was a page with the heading "Soweto's Best Couple" (Soweto is a well-known township, Nelson Mandela grew up there) and with this heading came a picture of a cuddling gay couple. You people should have read the comments on it, awful! It's 2013 and unfortunately many South Africans are still homophobic, very few people managed to say positive things about the picture...I spent the entire day feeling rather disappointed. I told my family that I am now dead serious about relocating to The USA where homophobia isn't tolerated and gay rights are being promoted. I'm now afraid of pursuing a relationship here, I might endanger myself! I am just so tired of this!

South Africa, and Africa in general is a shit hole. In another 500 years they may finally be progressive enough to catch up to Alabama, till then, just ignore the place.

Even a light of shining hope such as Capetown, S.A. is light years away from being a truly cosmopolitan and safe city as those in the west.

Africans are their own worst enemy.

This is a good read about how "rainbow" South Africa has declined so fast recently.

Interesting that I see that statement every time homophobia in Sub-Saharan Africa comes up.

Why is it interesting? It's the truth.

Life in Africa, particularly sub-saharan Africa for the middle and upper class is dangerous. Throw in being openly gay and you just have a huge target on your forehead.

Don't compare being able to get fired at work or being teased in the school year to the systematic rapes and killings of gays in Africa....

It's interesting that people only say that when homophobia comes up.

How else should I put it?

This is an internet forum. No need to to be angry at someone with no power.

    I didn't offend you, did I?

    Rose colored glasses are dangerous.

Life in the USA is difficult, grueling and unforgiving, especially if you are Black. And even worse if you are Black and gay. Even if you are very well educated. If you think anti-Black racism here isn't bad, you are in for some serious trauma. And homophobia - have you not been reading about NYC, where gays are shot point black on the street? Or doesn't that matter?

Perhaps it is the living standard that entices you. The material wealth in the USA is substantial, but it is much harder to procure than it used to be, now with globalization and all.

Be careful what you wish for. Try London and Toronto before you step foot in the USA.
