I used to sneak into my neighbor Pams cupboards in the 80's to eat these like crazy. I was only 10 but God, I loved them.

"Why take diet pills when you can enjoy Ayds?"

I remember Ayds in the ads - but never tasted them. I remember Yami Yogurt and Metrical (sp?) ads as well. I remember there were extremely few health clubs - like Jack LaLane's, Victannies (sp?) Ray & Claire Stern's and the Eileen Feather Figure Salons in and around San Francisco. Our Mom had this odd contraption she stood on with a wide belt that went around her and was reputed to shake off unwanted pounds and inches!

LMAO!!! Jeffrey, after we talked about this yesterday I started thinking of all the other diet bullshit stuff they had out there when we were kids. My grandmother has been a sucker for every diet gimmick out there.

I don't think my grandmother has ever understood the concept of these bullshit diet treats as she seems to eat them like any regular treat. Thats how I remembered the AYDS stuff but I also remember she had a stash of those waffer things that were like kit kats. They were called Figurines. They weren't too bad. They came in different flavors. Chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. I'm pretty sure they don't make those any more either.

So I was thinking if you tried to bring back AYDS and did an infomercial saying Hi my names Jeffrey and I'm bringing back AYDS. I could stand next to you and say Hi I'm Mark and I'm bringing back Firgurines icon_lol.gif

Ayds the candy definitely fell victim to Aids the pandemic.

I was working with a TV station at the time, and they were a ubiquitous sponsor during the noon news, etc. Once GRID (the inaccurately named Gay Related Immune Deficiency) became AIDS, the candy fell off the map.

This from Wikipedia, which says it was the #1 diet product in the 70s::
However, public awareness of the disease AIDS beginning around mid-1981 caused problems for the brand due to the phonetic similarity of names. Initially sales were not affected, but by 1988 the chairman of Dep Corporation announced that the company was seeking a new name because sales had dropped as much as 50 percent due to publicity about the disease [3]. The product's name was changed to Diet Ayds (Aydslim in Britain), but eventually it was withdrawn from the market.
